ANALYSIS STRATEGIES

3 TYPES:
1. Concept Analysis
2. Statement Analysis
3. Theory Analysis
CONCEPT ANALYSIS
DEFINITION:
— It is a process of examining the basic elements of a
concept.
— This allows the theorist, researcher, or clinician to come
to grips with the various possibilities within a concept of
interest— to “get inside” the concept and see how it
works.
CONCEPT ANALYSIS
PURPOSES:

— It helps us to distinguish that concept from ones that

are similar to, but not the same as, that concept.
— Also, it yields to the theorist or investigator a a basic
understanding of the underlying attributes of the
concepts.
CONCEPT ANALYSIS
PROCEDURES / STEPS:

1. Select a concept.
 This should reflect the topic or area of greatest interest in you.

2. Determine the aims or purpose of analysis.

 Whatever the purpose is for your analysis, keep it clearly in mind as
you work.

3. Identify uses of the concept.

 Using dictionaries, thesauruses, colleagues, and available literature,
identify as many uses of the concept as you can.
CONCEPT ANALYSIS
PROCEDURES / STEPS:

4. Determine the defining attributes.

 This is the heart of concept analysis.

5. Identify the Model Case(s).

 The Model Case should be a pure case of the concept, a paradigmatic
example, or a pure exemplar.
