Dental Assistant
Assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures

• Taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays)


• Helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
• Asking about the patient's medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse

• Taking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth)


• Providing patients with oral care instructions following surgery and other procedures,
such as the placement of a restoration (filling)
• Serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol, and
preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
• Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health, including
tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling
• Communicating with patients and suppliers, which may involve scheduling appointments,
answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies
Dental Technician
Dental technicians make and repair dental appliances, such as …
false teeth, crowns, bridges, implants or braces. Dentists use these appliances to replace or improve
their patients’ teeth, speech, appearance or ability to chew.

• using various materials such as metal, plaster or plastic
• carving

• grinding and polishing the item,
• checking that the finished item is correct in colour and design
• adjusting or repairing dental appliances
