population of a given age group that can read and write.

the ability to comprehend a short simple statement on
everyday life.

Conclusion
The historical literacy rate data for Kerala and Chhattisgarh from 1951 to 2011 highlights a
consistent difference in educational achievements between the two states. Kerala has
demonstrated remarkable progress, consistently maintaining high literacy rates over the
decades, while Chhattisgarh has shown improvement but continues to lag behind.
In 1951, the literacy rate in Kerala was 47.2%, significantly higher than Chhattisgarh's 9.4%.
Over the years, Kerala's commitment to education is evident as its literacy rate steadily
increased, reaching 94% in 2011.
Chhattisgarh, on the other hand, has also witnessed progress, but the gap with Kerala remains
substantial. From 9.4% in 1951, Chhattisgarh's literacy rate increased to 70.3% in 2011. While
this is commendable growth, it underscores the challenges the state faces in catching up with
the educational standards set by Kerala.
