ALMOND TREE

INTRODUCTION

 Almond is an important temperate fruit crop known for its kernels throughout
the world.
 The Almond is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of the
tree.
 Almond is a deciduous tree growing to 4-12.2 meters (13-40feet) in height,
with a trunk up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) in diameter.
 Almond grows best in Mediterranean climates with warm, dry summers and
mild, wet winters.
 The optimal temperature for their growth is between 15 and 30 degree
Celsius.
 Almond is also known as King of Nuts.
HISTORY OF ALMOND

 Almonds are originated in western parts of Asia and China.


 Botanical name of Almond is PRUNUS DULCIS.
 The name PRUNUS was first used by Miller(Webb,1967) in 1768 to designate
the cultivated ‘sweet’ almond as PRUNUS DULICUS and describe it as
botanical variety(1810) named this species PRUNUS AMYGDALUS, although
Archangel(1882) later used the name PRUNUS COMMUNIS for almond.
 Indian almond is also called as CATAPPA.
 Almonds have a long and rich history that can be traced back for thousands of
years.
 Almonds grew wild and were likely foraged by our ancestors before their
domestication in 4000BC.
USES OF ALMOND

 Growing its nuts, which can be eaten raw or processed into various products
such as oil, milk, butter, flour, extract, paste, syrup, and confectionery
baking.
 Making flavoring extracts for foods and liqueurs from the oil or bitter
almonds.
 Adding beauty to the garden with its drought tolerance and striking floral
display.
 Almonds are also suitable for diabetic diet.
 Enhancing the health of the digestive system , brain , skin , heart and blood
pressure , meeting nutritional needs during pregnancy.
