 STORAGE DEVICES

 TYPES
Introduction:

A storage device is an integral part of the

computer hardware which stores
information/data to process the result of
any computational work. Without a storage
device, a computer would not be able to
run or even boot up. A storage device for a
computer enables its user to store and
safely access the data and applications on a
computer device.

Types of Computer Memory:

 Primary Memory
 Secondary Memory
 Tertiary Memory
Primary Memory:

It is also known as internal memory and

main memory. This is a section of the CPU
that holds program instructions, input
data, and intermediate results. It is
generally smaller in size. RAM (Random
Access Memory) and ROM (Read Only
Memory) are examples of primary storage.
There are two types of primary memory.

TYPES:
 ROM
 RAM
ROM:
Read-only memory is a type of non-volatile
memory used in computers and other
electronic devices. Data stored in ROM
cannot be electronically modified after the
manufacture of the memory device. Its
capacity is 4MBs to 8MBs.

RAM:
Random-access memory is a form of
computer memory that can be read and
changed in any order, typically used to
store working data and machine code. It is
a volatile type of memory. It has a capacity
of about 1 to 265 GB per RAM chip.
Secondary Memory:

Secondary storage is a memory that is

stored external to the computer. It is
mainly used for the permanent and long-
term storage of programs and data. It
allows users to store data and information
that can be retrieved, transmitted, and
used by apps and services quickly and
easily.
EXAMPLE:
 Hard Disks
 CDs
 DVDs
 Pen/Flash drives
 SSD
Tertiary Memory:

Tertiary Memory is a type of Memory that

is rarely used in personal computers and
due to this, tertiary memory is not
considered to be an important one.
Tertiary memory works automatically
without human intervention. Examples of
tertiary storage are Magnetic tape, optical
disc, and optical tapes. These devices are
composed of fixed drivers and have their
own removable media units. If any media
is there in storage drives, the old media is
ejected, and new media is added to the
drive.
TYPES OF COMPUTER STORAGE
DEVICES:

Now we will discuss different types of

storage devices available in the market.
These storage devices have their own
specification and use. Some of the
commonly used storage devices are

TYPES OF STORAGE DEVICES:

 Primary Storage Devices
 Magnetic Storage Devices
 Flash memory Devices
 Optical Storage Devices
 Cloud and Virtual Storage
PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICES:
There are four types of primary storage
 Read Only Memory (ROM)
 Random Access Memory (RAM)
 Flash Memory.
 Cache Memory.

MAGNETIC STORAGE DEVICES:

 Hard Disk Drives.
 Floppy Disks.
 Removable Magnetic Disk Drives.
 Magnetic Tape.

FLASH MEMORY DEVICES:

 USB flash drives
 SD cards
 mobile phones
 digital cameras
 tablet computers
OPTICAL STORAGE DEVICES:
 CD-ROM
 DVD-ROM
 DVD-RAM
 BLU-RAY

IMPORTANCE OF STORAGE
DEVICES:
The importance of storage devices is that
they can retain almost all the data and
applications in a device. Depending on its
demand or performance, it comes in
various sizes and shapes. It can retain
information for the short term and the long
term. A storage device needs to reserve or
store your important data.
