WHAT IS
SUICIDE?
It is the act of intentionally
causing one’s own death.
• Suicide is serious public health problem; however, suicides are
preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost
interventions.
• Every year close to 800,000 people take their own life and
there are many more people who attempt suicide and it is the
second leading cause of death among 15-29 years old.
Suicide mortality rate is the number of suicide deaths in a year per
100,000 population. Crude suicide rate (not age-adjusted).
• UAE suicide rate for 2019 was 6.40, a 6.67% increase from 2018.
• UAE suicide rate for 2018 was 6.00, a 7.14% increase from 2017.
• UAE suicide rate for 2017 was 5.60, a 6.67% decline from 2016.
• UAE suicide rate for 2016 was 6.00, a 7.69% decline from 2015
REASONS WHY PEOPLE COMMIT
SUICIDE
• To end their suffering from intensely
painful circumstances
• Family problem
• Depression
CAUSES WHY PEOPLE COMMIT
SUICIDE
• Family problem
• Major psychiatric illness – Depression
• Losing hope or the will to live
• Unbearable emotional or physical pain
• Substance abuse – Alcohol and Drugs
AFTER EFFECTS OF SUICIDE
• Feel guilty
• Blame themselves for things they did or
didn’t do in the period
• Grapple with anger, relief and guilt
• People may feel they should have picked
up the warning signs
• Feel anger and betrayal
PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF
SUICIDE
• Reducing access to the means of suicide
(e.g. pesticides, firearms, certain
medications, ropes, sharp and pointed
objects, etc.)

• Reporting by media or social media in a
responsible way;

• Early identification, treatment and care of


people with mental and substance use
disorders, chronic pain and acute emotional
distress;

• Follow-up care for people who attempted
suicide and provision of community
support.
• Training of non-specialized health workers
in the assessment and management of
suicidal behaviour
