Lesson 4:

ICT and Multimedia

EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY
Multimedia

• Multimedia is content that uses a combination of different content forms such as text, audio,
images, animations, video and interactive content.

• Multimedia contrasts with media that use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-
only or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material.

• Multimedia can be recorded and played, displayed, interacted with or accessed by

information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but
can also be part of a live performance.

• Multimedia devices are electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia
content.
Characteristics of Multimedia

1. Multimedia systems must be computer controlled.

2. They are integrated.

3. The information they handle must be represented digitally.

4. The interface to the final user may permit interactivity.

Entertainment has become very popular.
Categorization of Multimedia

Multimedia in Education:
Five different multimedia which supports the education process:

exchange.
Categorization of Multimedia
Multimedia in Entertainment and Fine Arts:

 Used in the entertainment industry, especially to develop special

effects in movies and animations (VFX, 3D animation, etc.).

 Multimedia games are a popular pastime and are software programs

available either as CD-ROMs or online.

 In the arts there are multimedia artists, whose minds are able to blend
techniques using different media that in some way incorporates
interaction with the viewer.
Categorization of Multimedia

Multimedia in Business:

i) Video conferencing: This system enables to communicate using audio

and video between two different locations through their computers.

ii) Marketing and advertisement: Nowadays different advertisement

and marketing ideas about any product on television and internet is
possible with multimedia.
Categorization of Multimedia

Multimedia in Medicine:

 Multimedia in medicine is increasing rapidly.

 Doctors can be trained by looking at a virtual surgery (simulators).

 Simulate how the human body is affected by diseases spread by

viruses and bacteria and then develop techniques to develop it.
Categorization of Multimedia

Multimedia in Mathematics & Scientific Research:

 Mainly used for modeling and simulation.

 Representative research can be found in journals such as the Journal

of Multimedia.

 Make prototype about the invention and theory of different people.

Categorization of Multimedia

Multimedia in Language Communication:

 Creates a platform where language can be taught.

 The traditional form of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in classrooms

have drastically changed with the prevalence of technology.

 Motivates students to learn more languages through audio, visual and animation
support.

 Helps create English contexts since an important aspect of learning a language is

developing their grammar, vocabulary and knowledge of pragmatics and genres.

 Cultural connections in terms of forms, contexts, meanings and ideologies have to be

constructed.
RICH MEDIA
RICH MEDIA

• Applies to the utilization of various ICTs in order to enhance the

recipient’s experience.

• Rich Media Technologies usually exhibit at least one of the

following characters:

• Advanced animations are allowed.

• Audio or Radio is supported in Advertisement.
• Instant user interactions are made possible.
• Media elements exhibit dynamic motion.
COMMON RICH MEDIA TYPES

• Banners and Badges

• Interstitials
• In-stream Media
• Floating Media
BANNERS AND BADGES
• These provide a way to present
additional content and offer a great
deal of flexibility.

• A way to significantly increase both

branding and direct response
metrics
INTERSTITIALS

• These are video ads that play between

pages on a website

• This could appear as a pop-up window

or on the main browser window and it
could be set-up as a pre-cached or
through streaming techniques
depending on the needs of the
advertisements.
IN-STREAM MEDIA

• Consist of video and audio in order to

provide the users with rich and alive
information regarding what they are
viewing.

• Commonly known as “Streaming

Media”
FLOATING MEDIA
• This would float or move across the web page providing flexibility
for advertisers
INTERACTIVE MEDIA

• It refers to a computer-delivered electronic system that would allow a user to

control manipulate, and combine multiple types of media, such as audio, video, text,
computer graphics, and animation, for the purpose of training programs, video
games, travel guides, online advertisements, and electronic encyclopedias.
• This is a method of communication wherein the output of the media would come
from the input of the user
• The application of this would shift the role of the user, from being the observer to
being a participant
• Considered to be the next generation of Electronic Information System and has been
called Hybrid Technology
FACEBOOK 360

• Sample Video 1
VIRTUAL REALITY (VR)

• Also known as immersive multimedia.

• A form of computer technology which
allows users to experience a replicated
digital environment.
• Utilizes different form of multimedia
such as sound and motion graphics to
stimulate a situation.
