Obligations
(Kewajiban)
 Definition

Obligation is a situation when we are forced to do something

because it is our duty or because of the rule / law.
Obligation adalah situasi ketika kita diharuskan untuk
melakukan sesuatu karena hal tersebut adalah kewajiban kita
atau karena ada aturan atau hukum tertentu.
 Expressions of
Obligation
To express obligations, we can use :
 Must
 Have to
 MUST

Must is commonly used in personal obligation.

Must expresses the speaker’s feelings or
authority.
Must biasanya digunakan pada ungkapan kewajiban
yang berasal dari diri sendiri.
Must mengekspresikan perasaan dan keinginan
(kuasa) dari si pembicara.
 Example :
o I must study hard if I want to pass the
exam. (it’s my decision)

o You must come to my party. (you are

obliged to come – I require you to come)
 Have to
Have to expresses external, general
obligation, when there’s a rule / law /
regulation.
Have to digunakan pada ungkapan kewajiban
yang berasal dari luar pembicara dan bersifat
umum karena adanya suatu aturan / hukum
tertentu.
 Example
 I have to do my homework or I will be
punished. (I have no choice)

 You have to attend the flag ceremony

every Monday. (you are obliged to attend
the ceremony – There’s a rule requiring
you to attend the flag ceremony)

Prohibitions
(Larangan)
 Definition

Prohibition is the act of stopping something being done or

used, especially by law / rule.
Prohibition adalah tindakan menghentikan sesuatu yang
sedang dilakukan atau digunakan, terutama oleh hukum /
aturan.
 Expressions of
Prohibition
To express prohibitions, we can use :
 Must not / Mustn’t
 Don’t / Doesn’t have to
 The difference
 Must not / mustn’t is used to express
prohibition (not allowed to).
Must not / mustn’t adalah ungkapan untuk
melarang sesuatu dilakukan / digunakan.
 Don’t / doesn’t have to shows the lack of
obligation or necessity.
Don’t / doesn’t have to menunjukkan tidak
adanya kewajiban / keharusan melakukan /
menggunakan sesuatu.
 Example

 You mustn’t cheat on the exam. (You are

prohibited to cheat)

 You don’t have to sing on my birthday party. (It’s

not necessary for you to sing on my party, but
you can if you want to)

 Definition
Recommendation/suggestion is an act of giving advice or suggestion
about the best thing to do.
Recommendation/suggestion adalah memberikan saran / himbauan /
nasihat kepada orang lain mengenai hal yang terbaik untuk dilakukan.
 Expressions of
Recommendation/Suggestion
To express recommendations / suggestions,
we can use :
 Should
 Sentence Pattern

Example:
o We should get up early and have more exercise.
o He should drink 8 glasses of water to avoid dehydration.
o you should go to the dentist to cure your toothache.
