IMPLICATIONS OF

GLOBALIZATION ON
INFORMATION
SYSTEMS
Globalization
This a complex phenomenon that refers to the increasing interconnectedness and
interdependence of countries, economies, cultures, and societies around the world. It
involves the exchange of goods, services, information, technology, capital, and ideas across
national borders, leading to a global integration of economies and societies. Globalization is
driven by advancements in technology, transportation, and communication, which have
made it easier for people, goods, and ideas to move across continents. It encompasses
economic, political, social, and cultural dimensions, influencing various aspects of life,
including trade, finance, labor, politics, culture, and the environment. Globalization has both
positive and negative impacts, generating opportunities for economic growth, innovation,
cultural exchange, and cooperation, but also challenges related to inequality, cultural
homogenization, environmental degradation, and social disruptions.
POSITIVE IMPLICATIONS
 Infrastructure development. Globalization has led to
infrastructure development as it has increased the flow of goods
en services across boarders which increased connectivity between
countries has led to creation of new communication,
transportation infrastructures facilitating information systems like
eLearning activities and e. commerce .
 Stronger supply chain management: Globalization has
led to multiple suppliers and product facilities across different
countries . This has led to transfer of advanced technologies and
innovation across borders
 The social and cultural, environmental and economic aspects .
Globalization has enabled people from different countries to share
through information their culture and information this has been
achieved these through information systems like at Facebook,
watsapp and x.
POSSITIVE IMPLICATIONS
 Increases competition. Before globalization, each country was like its own echo system. But with
globalization boarders were opened and now industries in one country compete with industries in other
countries. This has led to the need for businesses to improve their information systems in order to stay
competitive. for example iPhone and android companies.

 Rapid technological advancements. Globalization drives continuous technological advancements.

Information systems must keep pace with these changes to leverage emerging technologies for
innovation and competitive advantage. It has created a competitive environment where businesses and
countries strive to stay ahead by improving on its information systems so that to win competition.

 Increased collaboration and innovation. Globalization promotes collaboration among researchers,

scientists and innovators world wide thus allowing experts from different countries to work together,
share knowledge and drive innovation in various fields. For example meta collaborates with face
book ,watsapp ,instagram for advertisement , e-commerce among others.

 Globalization has enabled students to study band acquire knowledge from foreign academic institutions
where students study and graduate from foreign universities using learning management systems such
as Google classroom.

 Globalization helps in decission making by providing international platforms such as Amazon, alibaba,
which help organizations compare prices and qualities of products so as to choose the best product.
Increased connectivity: The internet and other communication technologies have
played a significant role in globalization. They have facilitated the rapid exchange of
information, ideas, and data, enabling real-time collaboration and access to resources
from anywhere in the world.
Access to new cultures: Globalization allows for the exchange of ideas, information,
and cultural practices. This exposure to different cultures can enrich information
systems by incorporating diverse perspectives and approaches.
Spread of knowledge and technology: Globalization stimulates the spread of
knowledge and technology across borders. This means that advancements in
information systems can be shared and utilized by different countries, leading to
increased growth potential
NEGATIVE IMPLICATIONS
 Brain drain .This is a process where skilled workers leave
their home countries to work in developed countries. Brain
drain affects the development of local information systems
on industries located in the developing countries. The lack of
skilled professionals hamper the growth of domestic
technology sector hence hindering innovation.
 Unequal access to information: While globalization has
increased access to information in many parts of the world,
there is still a digital divide that leaves certain regions and
communities with limited access to technology and
information systems. This inequality hampers their ability to
fully participate in the global information society.
 Cyber security threats: Globalization has expanded the reach
of cyber threats and cybercrime. As information systems
become more interconnected, they become vulnerable to
hacking, viruses, and other malicious activities. Protecting
information systems from these threats requires constant
vigilance and investment in cyber security measures.
 Dependence on foreign technology: Globalization can lead to a heavy reliance on
foreign technology and software. This dependence raises concerns about
intellectual property rights, national security, and the potential for foreign control
and surveillance of critical information systems.
