DUCT DESIGN

DUCT DESIGNING

• 1 TR=400 CFM
• Diffusers
• Diffusers- Distance between 2
diffusers = 2-4 meters
• Maximum cfm through each
diffuser=600 cfm
• Maximum velocity through
each diffuser=600 fpm
• No.of supply diffusers= Total
cfm/max.cfm through each
diffuser
Standard sizes of diffusers

• 150x150 mm
• 225x225 mm
• 300x300 mm
• 375x375 mm
• 450x450 mm
• 525x525 mm
• 600x600 mm
• Duct design
• Head loss range =.08-0.15
inch WC/100ft
• Suggested value=0.1 inch
WC/100 ft
•Aspect Ratio
maximum allowed 1:4
Best ratio 1:1
• Shoe neck : Length =100 mm if
main duct width <500 mm
Length =150 mm if
main duct width >500 mm
• Tapering : Centre tapering ratio- 4:1
Side tapering ratio- 7:1

Tapering length: (W1-W2) X Tapering ratio

W1-Initial width
W2-Final width
Tapering ratio- 4 for centre tapering
7 for side tapering
• Elbow
If duct size less than 500 mm- 1 Splitter
If duct size 500 mm to 1000 mm- 2 Splitter
If duct size more than 1000 mm- 3 Splitter
SAMPLE PROBLEM

• We have a room with calculated tonnage of 10 TR.

room size is 15 m x10 m . Draw a duct system to supply
conditioned air to the room.
15 m

10 m
SOLUTION

• Total cfm - 10x400=4000 cfm

• No of supply diffusers=4000/600=6.66
take it as 7.
• Minimum no of return diffuser =7
• Minimum total diffusers =14
• Final total no of diffusers can be determined by taking combination
COMBINATION

Length =15 m Width= 10 m

15/1 =15 m 10/1 =10 m
15/2 =7.5 m 10/2 =5 m
15/3 =5 m 10/3 =3.3 m
15/4 = 3.75 m 10/4 =2.5 m
15/5 = 3 m 10/5 =2 m
15/6 =2.5 m 10/6 =1.6 m
15/7 =2.1 m
15/8 =1.8 m
• So from combination we found that total no of diffusers =15
• No of supply diffusers =7
• So return diffusers=8

• CFM through one supply diffuser=4000/7 =571 cfm
