Construction Cost Estimating H01

Given Data:
Length of Wall = 150 ft
Height of Wall = 15 ft
Size of block = 7 5/8 x 7 5/8 x 7 5/8 inch
Mortar joint thickness = 3/8 inch
Horizontal bond beam = 4 ft oc containing 2-#4 bars
Vertical reinforcement = 1 # 5 bar at 32 inch oc
Bar length = 20 ft
Overlapped length = 30 d

Calculate No of blocks, no of bond beams, rebar and quantity of mortar and grout.

Solution:
1. No of blocks:
Volume of 1 cube = (7 5/8 x 7 5/8 x 7 5/8) / (12 x 12 x 12) = 0.2565 ft3
Volume of wall = 150 x 15 x 7 5/8 / 12 = 1429.68 ft3
No of Blocks = 1429.68 / 0.2565 = 5573.88 say 5575 CMU Blocks

2. Quantity of Mortar:
Area of Wall = 150 x 15 = 2250 ft2
5 CF of mortar per 100 SF of wall
Therefore,
Quantity of Mortar = 2250 x 5 / 100 = 112.5 CF

3. Quantity of Grout:
Area of Wall = 150 x 15 = 2250 ft2
17 CF of Grout per 100 SF of wall
Therefore,
Quantity of Grout = 2250 x 17 / 100 = 191.25 CF
4. No. of Bond Beams:
As the length of the wall is 150 ft
One beam will be of 20 ft of length
However, we have to deduct the overlapping form each beam.
Overlap length for #4 bars = 30 d = 30 x 0.5 inch = 15 inch = 1.25 ft
Effective length of central beams = 20 – 2 (1.25) = 17.5 ft.
Effective length of side beams = 20 – 1.25 = 18.75 ft
Total No. of bond beams = 150 / 17.5 = 8.57 say 9 beams

5. No 4 Rebar for bond beams:

Total length = 150 ft
2 #4 bars for each bond beam
Therefore,
No of central beam rebar = 7 x 2 = 14 #4 bars
No of side beam rebar = 2 x 2 = 4 #4 bars

Total #4 rebar for bond beam = 18 #4 rebar

6. No 5 Rebar for vertical reinforcement:

Total length = 150 ft
Distance between each reinforcement = 32 inch oc = 2.67 ft
No. of reinforcement bars = 150 / 2.67 = 56.17
Therefore,
57 #5 bars at 32 inch each will be required for vertical reinforcement
