Creating Rhythmic
Patterns
Directions: Draw the missing rest on the space to complete the
rhythmic patterns below. Write your answer on a separate sheet
of paper.
Patterns in music follow a specific rhythm.
To understand this further, you need to learn
the different kinds of notes and rests and
their time values. In the last lesson, you have
learned how to create rhythmic patterns in
Volcanic Activities

the basic time signatures.

Always remember that in creating rhythmic

patterns, it is important to count the time

values of notes and rests according to the
time signature.
Clap the following Rhythmic patterns.

What symbols do you see in the illustration
above? (Notes, rest and time signature)
Combining different notes and rest creates rhythm
that becomes a pattern to make a musical
arrangement. The very first thing you need to check
in creating a rhythmic pattern is the time signature.
From there, you can now determine the number of
beats that should be in a measure.
Let us examine this simple rhythmic pattern.

What is the time signature?

If you add the number of corresponding beats in every

measure, how much do you get?

You have the option to write either
a note or a rest as long as the total
corresponds to the number of beats
in every measure.
Sustainable A. Copy and complete the rhythmic pattern by
supplying a correct note or a rest inside the box. Do this on
your notebook.
In creating a r____________ p________
you must first consider the time signature.
You can use either a n___________ or a
r_________________ provided it sums up
to the correct number of beats in every
measure.
