Welcome to the TLE 6 - Home Economics Self-Learning Self-Learning Module


on Basic and Social Needs!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

LESSON

Everyone motivates to work hard to meet their needs and wants. It


encourage us to be productive in every endeavour that we do to help us
provide with our basic and social needs. But what is the difference between
basic and social needs?

Basic Needs are the things people required in order to survive and
sustain daily living. These are:
 Food – It is important need of the body. There is a need of
sufficient amount of food in order to meet the demands of
energy of individual.

 Shelter – It is the place where we live. It is our protection


from sun, flood, storm, wind and etc.

 Clothing – It is absolutely necessary for everybody as it is a


protection to the body.

 Water – People need water to sustain their body. We use


water for drinking, washing, cleaning, cooking and
watering plants.

 Clean Air – It is necessary for the body to breathe. Without


clean air, there is no life.
 Education – It is the other need of life. It teaches us
methods how to live in various situation. People who
deprived from education find it difficult to surpass trying
times, so, education is a basic need in life.
Social Needs, on the other hand, are the things needed that can’t be
physically felt or seen such as:

 Love – It is the feeling of closeness and bonding created


from family, friends, peers and other people.

 Safety - These needs include the security of body, of


employment, of resources, of morality of family, and of
health.

 Acceptance – It refers to the need of belongingness and


inclusion in a group of people.

Social needs also give us sense of fulfilment and self-actualization in


doing sports, celebrations, travels and leisure.

Everyone has basic and social needs. We all need food, house, clean air,
water and education to survive in our daily living. On the other hand, it is
also important to meet our social needs as it helps in preventing anxiety,
depression and loneliness especially during hard times.

As we are currently experiencing a COVID-19 pandemic, how can you
