ABSTRACT:
• AN ELECTROMAGNETIC BRAKING SYSTEM IS A METHOD OF
SLOWING OR STOPPING MOTION USING
ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCE RATHER THAN TRADITIONAL
FRICTION-BASED METHODS. IT INVOLVES THE CONVERSION
OF KINETIC ENERGY INTO ELECTRICAL ENERGY TO
GENERATE THE BRAKING FORCE.
INTRODUCTION

• This project intends to the design ,analysis and implementation of new

braking system.
• We are trying to analyse a braking system which is economical and
environment friendly.
• The design of brakes based upon the phenomenon of electromagnetic
induction and eddy currents.
• The eddy current development obeys Maxwell's law of electromagnetic
induction and Lenz's law.
UTILITY OF PROJECT

• In this project we are making a brake which can be used in automobiles.

Here we are using a metal disk and a electromagnetic coil. The rotation of
disk at high speed is stopped through electromagnetic effect.
• It has been seen that electromagnetic brakes are three times stronger than
conventional friction brakes.
NEED FOR ALTERNATIVE OF CONVENTIONAL
BRAKES

• All conventional braking system retard automobile by the development of

contact friction.
• Due to this friction there is a wear and tear of brakes. In high velocity
vehicles there is more wear and tear of brakes so it become costly because
of replacement of brakes.
• Conventional brakes are less effective in wet conditions.
It increases weight of vehicles and sometimes creates noise.
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC
BRAKES

• When the electromagnet is not energised, the rotation of disk is free under
the action of weight to which its shaft is connected. When the electromagnet
is energised the rotation of disk is retarded and the energy absorbed
appears as heating of disk.
• As the metal disk cuts through the magnetic field a current which moves in a
circular manner in the disk is created thus the eddy currents, according to
Lenz law the induced current will create its own magnetic field that opposes
the magnetic field that created it there by providing the necessary drag
force required to retarding the motion of the disk.
WORKING MECHANISM
PROS AND CONS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC
BRAKES

Pros
• Highly Reliable
• Low maintenance is required
• Less Noise
• Economical
Cons
• Less effective under very low velocities.
MATERIALS REQUIRED

• Wooden Stand
• Metal Disk
• DC Motor
• DC Electromagnetic coil
• BEARING
• DC 12v Battery
• Mini wheel
MATERIAL ANALYSIS

• Ferromagnetic materials display poor performance characteristics in the use

as eddy currents disc materials. There are three strong candidates of
material which are zinc, copper and aluminium.
PREFERRED MATERIAL

• From their experimental evaluation aluminium proved to be the best

material. A further investigation was carried out to analyse two different
alloys of aluminium which are A16061 and A17075, from the study was
concluded that Al6061 has greater performance than Al/075 as the brake
disc material. The ability of aluminium to perform better than the other
material is due to the absence of magnetic susceptibility as shown in table.
Although the disc material is not the only parameter to be considered to
achieve the optimal results it can be concluded that the disc material plays
a pivotal role in obtaining the optimal solution.
APPLICATION

• Trams and trains use electromagnetic track brakes where the braking
element is pressed by magnetic force to the rail. They are distinguished from
mechanical track brakes, where the braking element is mechanically
pressed on the rail.
• Electric motors in industrial and robotic applications also employ
electromagnetic brakes.
• Recent design innovations have led to the application of electromagnetic
brakes to aircraft applications.
CONCLUSION

• During the making of this project we can conclude that there is a

requirement of new innovations in the field of braking system and
electromagnetic brakes are prove to be more beneficial than conventional
brakes.
• From the study it can be concluded that aluminium is the best material to
use as eddy currents brake disc material, aluminium disc display an
increase in braking torque whilst using low current. Furthermore as shown in
tables, aluminium disc have a low density better than copper and zinc which
means the braking system will be of light weight. Aluminium is the least
priced of all the three materials and the cheapest to machine and join hence
this will contribute in reducing the cost of the braking system.
