INTRODUCTION

• A break is a mechanical device which retards motion.

• Electromagnetic breaks operate electrically, but transmits
torque mechanically.
• This is why they used to be referred to as electro mechanical
breaks.
• Electromagnetic breaks are used as supplementary
retardation equipment in addition to the regular friction
breaks.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

•The working principle of the electro

magnetic brake is based on the creation
of the magnetic field with in a metal disc
rotating between two electro magnets
which sets up a force opposing the
rotation of the disc.
ELECTROMAGNETIC BREAKING
• Disc is rotated in magnetic field.
• Eddy currents will be produced in the disc.
• Eddy currents include in the disc will produce a
torque.
• Produced torque in disc opposes actual rotation of
disc(lenz law).
ADVANTAGES
• High impact.
• Low maintenance requirement.
• Less noise.
• Simple in design.
• High degree of safety.

DISADVANTAGES
• Usage of electric power for breaking.
• Less effective under every low velocities.
APPLICATIONS
• Already in use under some railway systems.
• Can be used for any road vehicles.
• Equally applicable to heavy and light vehicles.
• Can be used as additional retarder for aircraft.
CONCLUSION
• Electro magnetic breaking system is superior to
convenctional frictional breaking as there is no any
friction and heat in electromagnetic breaking
system. The combination of eddy currents and
magnetic forces makes this break more effective.
This break can be used as auxiliary break system
in vehicle.
