NANO TECHNOLOGY IN CANCER THERAPY
Nanomaterials have ‘enormous’ potential in cancer
treatment
Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of
matter at the nanoscale, at dimensions between
approximately 1 and 100 nanometers
One nanometer is a billionth of a meter or 10-9 of a
meter
Scientists are using nanoparticles to target tumors, in
drug delivery systems, and to improve medical
imaging
Cancer detection and treatment: Gold nanoparticles as
probes for the detection of targeted sequences of
nucleic acids, and they are also being clinically
investigated as potential treatments for cancer and
other diseases.

Device to diagnose dengue within
an Spectroscopy
Surface Enhanced Raman hour (SERS)
• Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
have developed a handheld Surface Enhanced Raman
Spectroscopy (SERS)-based platform for early diagnosis
of dengue and also gives dengue test results within one
hour (rapid diagnosis).
• The research work was funded by IMPRINT India
programme of the Ministry of Education

What is Dengue?

Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bite of an

infected Aedes species (Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus)
mosquito. Almost half of the world’s population, about 4
billion people, live in areas with a risk of dengue. Dengue is
often a leading cause of illness in areas with risk.

A US woman has been cured of HIV after receiving a
transplant of umbilical cord blood.
● She has become the third person in the world, and the first
woman, to be cured of HIV
What is Cord Blood? Cord blood (short for umbilical cord
blood) is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and
placenta post-delivery.
● It contains special cells called hematopoietic stem cells
that can be used to treat some types of diseases.
What is Cord blood banking?
Cord blood banking is the process of collecting the cord
blood and extracting and cryogenically freezing its stem
cells and other cells of the immune system for potential
future medical use.
● Globally, cord blood banking is recommended as a source
of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for
haematological cancers and disorders where its use is
recommended.
