• Influence lines for beams

DEFINITION
An influence line is a graphical
representation of how a specific point or section of
a structure responds to a concentrated load or
moving load. It is used in structural analysis to
determine the maximum and minimum values of
internal forces and deformations at a particular
point in a structure. Influence lines are typically
created by superimposing the effects of a load at
various positions along the structure and are used
to design and evaluate the strength and stability of
bridges, buildings, and other structures.

EXAMPLE
A simple beam is subjected to three concentrated
loads. Determine the magnitudes of the reactions and
the shear force and bending moment at the midpoint
of the beam using influence lines.
REACTION

SHEAR

MOMENT
Using influence lines, determine the shear force and the
bending moment at the midpoint of the loaded simple
beam, as shown.
SHEAR

MOMENT
Using influence lines, determine the shear force and
bending moment at the midpoint k of a beam shown (a).
The beam is subjected to a series of moving concentrated
loads, which are shown (b).
