What is it all about?
VECTOR MULTIPLICATION

Scalar Product Vector Product

• Dot Product • Cross Product
• Denoted by • = c • Denoted by =
• A measure of how closely two vectors
align, in terms of the direction they point. • It is a binary operation on two vectors in
three dimensional space.
The dot product is a scalar whose equals the product of their absolute values times
the cosine of the angle between them.
Formula: • = |A||B|cos

Dot or Scalar NOTE:

= projection of A parallel ( ) to B
Product hen the dot product of two identical unit vectors is always 1.
= projection of A perpendicular ( ) to B
hen the dot product of two orthogonal vectors is always 0.

Dot Product of Vectors in 3 Dimensions:

𝐴 Given the three–dimensional and
A = + +
= + +
𝜃 Their dot product is given by:
A ⃗
𝐵 •= + +
Dot Product Using Vector Component Form:

APPLICATIONS OF DOT OR SCALAR
PRODUCT
Mathematically, work is the dot product of force and displacement.

W=Fd
W = Fd cos

The dot product is also used in the calculation of vector projections, electric
flux, magnetic flux, and electric current.
EXAMPLES:
1. Find the dot product of two vectors with magnitude A= 30m and B=15m, if the angle between them is equal
to 30º.

• = |A||B|cos
30m •= (30m)(15m) cos
30º •= 450 cos (30)
15m •= 389.71m²

2. Determine the dot product of the two vectors shown in the figure whose magnitudes are 5 and 10 respectively.
10
5 • = |A||B| cos
•= (5)(10) cos 40º
60º 80º •= 50 cos (40) = 40
•= 38.30
3. Determine the product of A= 5 + + 7 and B= -3 + 2 + and find the angle between them.

•= + + =
• = (5)(-3) + (1)(2) + (7)(1) =
• = -15 +2 + 7 =
• = -6

=
=
= 100

4. Given: = 8and -6 = 4 and 3

Solution:
•= +
• = (8)(4) + (-6)(3)
• = 32 + (-18)
• = 14
