Who Were the Mughals?

• The Mughal Empire ruled most of India and


Pakistan in the 16th and 17th centuries. It
consolidated Islam in South Asia, and spread
Muslim arts and culture as well as the faith.
There first ruler was Babur and it was
founded in 1526. They were Muslims who
ruled India with a large Hindu majority.

Mughal art and architecture
• Mughal architecture is the type of Indo-Islamic architecture developed by the
Mughals in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries throughout their empire in the
Indian subcontinent. The Mughal rulers were very interested in art and
architecture, they built very beautiful breathtaking mosques and buildings; One
of them is known as the wonders of the world, The Taj Mahal. They also left
behind a lot of their art and legacies.
• The Mughals built an empire spanning almost all of India, and thus created
history. It was after the second half of the 16th century that they expanded
their kingdom from Agra and Delhi. Till in the 17th century they had
Mughal conquered nearly all of the subcontinent. The Mughals implemented such
structures of administration and methods of governance that outlasted
Legacies their rule, which are still relevant in contemporary times, thus leaving
behind a legacy that the following rulers of the subcontinent could not
disregard.
Mughal Queens

• Mughals Queens were well-educated; they knew


art, architecture, poetry and much more. They
were very supportive towards the empire as well!

How did the Mughal
empire fall?
• The Mughal Empire began
to decline in the 18th century,
during the reign of
Muḥammad Shah (1719–48).
Most of its territory fell under
the control of the Marathas
and then the British. The
last Mughal emperor,
Bahadur Shah II (1837–57),
was exiled by the British.
• Mughal Art and architecture
was left behind after the
empire collapsed. They had
great poetry that was also
left behind. Their building
are still recognized in today’s
world.

known as the
strongest
Muslim
empire to ever
rule after the
Ottomans and
Abbasids.
