Academic Honesty
Academic Honesty
Academic dishonesty or academic misconduct is any type of cheating that
occurs in relation to a formal academic exercise. It can include
• Plagiarism: The adoption or reproduction of original creations of another
author (person, collective, organization, community or other type of
author, including anonymous authors) without due acknowledgment.
• Fabrication: The falsification of data, information, or citations in any
formal academic exercise.
• Deception: Providing false information to an instructor concerning a
formal academic exercise—e.g., giving a false excuse for missing a
deadline or falsely claiming to have submitted work.
• Cheating: Any attempt to give or obtain assistance in a formal academic
exercise (like an examination) without due acknowledgment.
• Sabotage: Acting to prevent others from completing their work or falsely
causing others to be blamed for academic misconduct.
What is Plagiarism?
It is the act of stealing or passing off the
ideas or words as one’s own; the use of a
created production without crediting the
source; the act of committing literary theft;
to present as new and original an idea or
product derived from an existing source

Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary 9th ed.

In other words….
So how can I use it?
• You may rephrase anything that your read. In
other words, put it into your own words. Do
NOT copy anything word for word. Unless…
• You are quoting someone. You may use direct
quotes if you put it in quotation marks, and cite
your source in the content.
• You may legally use parts of a copyrighted
work, but you must always give the author the
credit for his/her hard work.

Note: This includes pictures, graphics, music and software too!!!

Students. If:
• you have included
the words and ideas
of others in your
work and you don’t
cite them,
• you have had help
you wouldn’t want
your teacher to know
about,
Two types of plagiarism:
• Intentional • Unintentional
– Copying a friend’s work – Careless paraphrasing
– Buying or borrowing – Poor documentation
papers
– Quoting excessively
– Cutting and pasting text
from electronic sources – Failure to use your own
without documenting “voice”
Excuses
Everyone does it!
It’s okay if
I don’t get caught!

This assignment
I was too busy to
was BORING!
write that paper!
(Job, big game, too much homework!)
I’ve got to get
into
University!
My teachers
expect My parents
too much! expect “9”s!
Rationale for academic integrity
(as if it were necessary!)
• When you copy you cheat yourself. You
limit your own learning.
• The consequences are not worth the risks! Is your academic
• It is only right to give credit to authors reputation valuable
whose ideas you use to you?
• Citing gives authority to the information
you present
• Citing makes it possible for your readers
to locate your source
• Education is not an “us vs. them” game!
It’s about learning to learn!
• Cheating is unethical and dishonest
Possible school consequences:
• “0” on the assignment
• Parent notification
• Referral to the
headmaster or teamleader
• Suspension or dismissal
from school activities--
sports and extracurricular
• Note on student record
• Loss of reputation among
the school community
Is this important?
• What if:
– The architect who built your home cheated on his math
test. Will your new home be safe?
– Your lawyer copied his friends papers at Law School.
Will the contract she wrote for you stand up in court?
– The accountant who takes care of your taxes lied about
doing his homework all through school? Should you trust
him with your money?
(Lathrop and Foss 87)
Do I have
to cite
everything?
Nope!
• Facts that are widely known, or
• Information or judgments considered
“common knowledge”
Do NOT have to be documented.
Hooray for
common
knowledge!
Examples of common knowledge

• Wilhelmina was Queen of Holland during

WWII
• Germany invaded Holland on May 4, 1940

If you see a fact in three or more sources,

and you are fairly certain your readers
already know this information, it is likely to
be “common knowledge.”
But when in doubt, cite!
No need to document when:
• You are discussing your own experiences,
observations, or reactions
• Compiling the results of original research,
from science experiments, etc.
• You are using common knowledge

You can “borrow” from the
works of others in your
own work!
Use these three strategies,
• Quoting
• Paraphrasing
• Summarizing

To blend source materials in with your own, making

sure your own voice is heard.
Quoting
Quotations are the exact words of an author, copied directly
from a source, word for word. Quotations must be cited!

Use quotations when:

• You want to add the power of an author’s words to support
your argument
• You want to disagree with an author’s argument
• You want to highlight particularly well-written or powerful
phrases
• You are comparing and contrasting specific points of view
• You want to note important research that precedes your own
Carol Rohrbach and Joyce Valenza
Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing means rephrasing the words of an author,
putting his/her thoughts in your own words. When you
paraphrase, you rework the source’s ideas, words,
phrases, and sentence structures with your own. Like
quotations, paraphrased material must be cited.

Paraphrase when:
• You plan to use information on your note cards and wish
to avoid plagiarizing
• You want to avoid overusing quotations
• You want to use your own voice to present information
Carol Rohrbach and Joyce Valenza
Summarizing
Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) of one
or several writers into your own words, including only
the main point(s). Summaries are significantly shorter
than the original and take a broad overview of the
source material. Again, it is necessary to attribute
summarized ideas to their original sources.
Summarize when:

• You want to establish background or offer an overview of a topic

• You want to describe knowledge (from several sources) about a topic
• You want to determine the main ideas of a single source
Carol Rohrbach and Joyce Valenza
