 Background

A coagulant is a substance that facilitates and accelerates the compaction or binding of

substances in the coagulation process.The coagulation process that can occur due to the presence
of coagulants is the process of becoming hard or solid, either all or part of the organic and
inorganic solids in the liquid as a result of chemical changes.
Bio itself is a living organism. So a biocoagulant itself is the utilization of a living
organism substance to carry out the process of compacting or binding an organic or inorganic solid
substance in a liquid so as to produce what is known as precipitation which is commonly referred
to as tss.
In efforts to prevent the environment from tofu production waste. By utilizing
biocoagulants from moringa leaves and tamarind seeds, it is hoped that it can reduce the adverse
effects of the tofu waste in the future. The effectiveness of natural biocoagulants derived
from moringa seeds and tamarind seeds in efforts to improve water quality is high

 Discussion

From the test results of the coagulation process using moringa and tamarind biocoagulants, it
can be :
tamarind seeds and moringa seeds have the ability as biocoagualan.
The ability of tamarind seed biocoagulants is better at forming TSS (deposits / floc), TDS and
COD in tofu liquid waste than moringa biocoagulants.
Moringa biocoagulants require larger doses and longer settling times than tamarind
biocoagulants to form tss (precipitates/floc), tds and cod in tofu liquid waste.
The highest TSS of moringa biocoagulants at 2-hour settling was 74.8%.
The highest decrease in the TDS value of moringa biocoagulants at 3-hour deposition with a
TDS value of 14.7%.
The highest COD decrease in moringa biocoagulants was at 3-hour deposition with a value of
17.1%.
The highest TSS of tamarind biocoagulants at 2-hour settling was 78.1%

21.7%
 Discussion

Tamarind seeds (tamarindus indica) and moringa seeds (moringa oleifera) have the ability as
natural coagulants to form floc (tss) which can reduce COD and TDS in tofu waste so that they
are safe.

TOTAL SUSPENDED Suspended substances usually consist of organic and

SOLID (TSS) inorganic substances that hover in water, physically these
substances as the cause of turbidity in water. Liquid waste that
has a high content of suspended substances should not be
discharged directly into water bodies because besides being
able to cause siltation, it can also block sunlight from entering
the water bottom so that the microorganism photosynthesis
process cannot take place.

CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND
(COD)
Cod is the amount of oxygen needed to oxidize
organic substances contained in liquid waste by utilizing
potassium dichromate oxidizers as a source of oxygen.
The COD number is a measure of water pollution by
organic substances that can naturally be oxidized
through biological processes and can cause a reduction
in dissolved oxygen in water.

The conclusion, seen from the table of trial results, is that the tamarind seed
biocoagulant is more effective than the Moringa leaf biocoagulant.
