• Real life example. • Use of example/ evidence

Example: Explain how the price elasticity of demand for a good might be affected by the number and
closeness of substitutes.
Introduction (definitions)

When a good has numerous close substitutes or alternatives, its demand tends to exhibit greater elasticity. Since
consumers have various options to fulfil the same need or want , when the price of the primary product rises, consumers
can readily switch to alternative products to meet the same requirement. For instance, butter is an example of a good
with numerous close substitutes. Consumers can satisfy the same need by using alternatives such as margarine, olive oil,
sunflower oil, and more. Therefore, consumers may display higher sensitivity to fluctuations in the price of butter, as they
can easily opt for margarine or olive oil, among others. (Then you can link to the diagram). In this case, butter has price
elastic demand. This is shown by a more horizontal demand curve (D1) where quantity demanded for butter would
decrease in a higher proportion when its price increases, as consumers would have the option to buy margarine or olive
oil instead. We can see as the price for butter increases in slightly from – to – the its quantity demanded decreases in a
bigger proportion from – to -.
