Applications of area and perimeter can be seen widely in our everyday

life. We can observe various rectangular parks, square plots and
triangular grounds that have different areas and perimeters.

Solve each of the following problems:

1. The figures given below each show a square of length 1 unit [5]
containing some circles shaded in blue.
i. Calculate the area of the shaded part for each square.
ii. Which of the figures will have the greatest shaded area?

2. Imagine you are building a new Olympic stadium and you are [5]
responsible for designing and marking out the running track.

The track needs to fulfil the following specifications:

• The distance around the inside edge of the innermost

lane should be 400m.
• The track should consist of two straight sections joined
by two semi-circular sections.
• The straight sections should each be 90m in length.
• There should be 4 lanes.
• Each lane should be 1.25m wide.

Calculate:

i. the radius of the innermost curved path

ii. the distance covered by a person running on the
outermost track

PHYSICS
For this activity, we will be using Colour Vision from PhET Interactive
Simulations. Using this simulation, you will learn about primary and
secondary colours, colour addition and colour subtraction.
Click on the following link.
https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/color-vision/latest/color-vision_en.html
Run the simulation, copy and paste the given worksheet on a word
document and answer the questions.

1 [3]
Open the simulation and select the Single Bulb option. Choose
a filter colour. Move the bulb colour slider from violet to red end
slowly and observe how filters can affect the colour vision.

A red, violet and light blue light is observed through a cyan

filter. Record the colour as perceived by the observer in the
table given below. Add screenshots to support your answer.

2 Now, select the RGB bulbs option. Explore how the primary [4]
colours interact to create secondary colours and complete the
table given below. Add screenshots to support your answer.

BIOLOGY

Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane. The

water moves from an area of higher solvent concentration to the area of
lower solvent concentration. It is an important passive transport process in
living organisms.

Watch the video given below and use it as a reference.

Carry out a simple experiment given below to demonstrate osmosis.
Materials required:
• Gummy bear candies (or other gummy candies)/ raisins/coloured
orbeez
• Water
• Milk
• Honey
• 3 shallow bowls

Procedure:
• Take three shallow bowls and partially fill them with water, milk and
honey respectively.
• Place one or more of the candies in each bowl containing water,
milk and honey.
• Let the set up remain undisturbed for an hour.

Answer the following questions based on your observations:

1. Compare the size of gummy candies in each bowl. [3]

Write down your observations.
2. How does the osmosis vary with different solvents? [3]
3. Attach the photographic evidences of the experiment .
Conducted. [2]
4. Write any two applications of the osmosis in daily life. [2]

CHEMISTRY
Paper chromatography is a technique for separating dissolved chemical
substances by taking advantage of their different rates of migration across
sheets of paper. It is a separation technique used to separate a mixture
having several components.

Carry out a simple experiment to demonstrate chromatography.

Materials required:
• Sketch pens or marker pens of different colours.
• Glass tumblers/jar/beaker
• Water as solvent
• Tissue paper

You can watch a video from the link provided and use it as a reference to
perform the experiment: https://youtu.be/LbZvnTdkgR4

Perform your own chromatography experiment with at least 4 sketch or

marker pens of different colours. Calculate Rf values for any one colour
separated in any one sample. Make a report on your findings.

You can watch a video from the link provided as a reference for your
calculations: https://youtu.be/NZOhzIjsmPk

Answer the following questions based on the chromatogram obtained:

1. Show the calculations for the Rf values.
2. Include any two applications of chromatography.
3. Attach photographic evidence for the experiment conducted.
Rubrics:
Conducting experiment – 4 marks
Rf value calculation – 2 marks
Application – 2 marks
Photographic evidence- 2 marks
