Archimedes Talks – Spring 2024


The University of British Columbia is hosting Archimedes Talks, a speaker series for high
school students that takes place on UBC’s Vancouver campus. Any students interested in
active areas of research in math and science are invited to attend.
This year, the sessions will take place on:

• Sunday, April 7

Emerging Artist Scholarship Program


• YVR Art Foundation recently announced our Call for Applications to the 2024
Scholarship Program, and we would appreciate your help to spread the word and
encourage young artists to apply!
• The Emerging Artist Scholarship Program is for BC and Yukon Indigenous visual artists
(age 17-29) to either attend a school of art or art training program or work with a
mentor artist. Awards are for $5,000 and up to seven will be awarded in 2024.
Scholarship recipient artworks will also be on display at the Vancouver International
Airport!

• The BC Excellence and Pathway to Teacher Education scholarships are open.

designated post-secondary institution or B.C.-authorized trades training provider

• ISACA Vancouver is hosting their 3rd Annual Capture the Flag competition on Friday
March 8, 2024, for high school students during the Vancouver International Privacy and
Security Summit.
• We are pleased to announce that we have arranged for a hybrid event this year for
students to attend in person at the Westin Bayshore, Vancouver, or online.

Entrance scholarships for domestic students


• We will be awarding automatic grades-based entrance scholarships this year to Canadian citizens and
permanent residents completing a Canadian secondary school diploma.
Eligible students must be:
• current secondary students or entering UVic within two years of having completed secondary school
with no previous post-secondary studies and meet the following grade average minimums:
• All domestic students: minimum 90% (32 IB points, excluding Bonus points) $2,000+
• Indigenous students: minimum 85% (30 IB points, excluding Bonus points) $1,500+

INTRO TO COMPUTING IN JAVA


• Jan 27 - Mar 16, 2024 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am | Grade 9-12
• Introduction to Computing in Java is a series of seven online workshops that run from 10-11:30 am every Saturday
between Jan 27-Mar 16, 2024 (except for the Feb 17 long weekend). In this workshop series, Grade 9-12 students will
learn what computer science and computer programming is about. They will also use fundamental programming
concepts such as variables, data types, comparison and logical operators, control structures, and functions to create
useful programs. This workshop series will be taught using the Java programming language. There will be a show-
and-tell session during the final workshop, in which students will present their work to their peers and celebrate
their accomplishments. All workshops will be offered virtually via Zoom.
• We recommend having some programming experience before joining this program, which you can acquire by
attending our Hour++ of Code workshops. Don’t forget to review the program overview and requirements before
registering! Please do not sign up if you know you will miss more than one workshop in this 7-week program. We

• Arnel Aliwalas, Explorations in Aviation Careers program instructor, has organized a field trip for students
interested in exploring careers in aviation. Students will tour BCIT’s Aerospace Campus, Canada’s largest
aerospace technology school, and MTU Canada’s facility in Delta, BC.
• While at BCIT, students will have an opportunity to learn about BCIT’s Aviation programs – Airline &
Flight Operations, Aviation Management and Operations, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and Gas
Turbine/Jet Engine Technician. MTU Canada is a provider of aircraft engine inspection, maintenance,
overhaul and repair services.
• Students will tour MTU’s shops and learn about career and employment opportunities in the aviation
maintenance field.
