Rates of reaction

 Rate of reaction : How could we measure, how quick the reaction was
 The rate of reaction can be measured by working out how much of one of the
products has been made in given time, or how much of a reactant has been used
up in a given time.
Using the Graph
• The slope or gradient of the line tells you how quickly the reaction is taking
place
• The steeper the slope, the faster the reaction (start of reaction)
• When the line levels out, it shows that the reaction has ended
Why does the rate of Reaction change
 The following events must occur before a reaction can proceed:

 The reactant particles must collide with each other.

 The collisions must be of enough energy to overcome the ‘energy barrier’, called the activation
energy
 The reactants must form new bonds to produce products.
Surface area and the rate of Reaction
Temperature and the rate of Reaction
 Increasing the temperature of a reaction increases the kinetic energy of the particles. The particles
collide more often and with more energy this increases the frequency of effective collisions which
increases the rate of reaction
