OBJECTIVES

• Map out the history of the emergence of media both in


the global and local arena, including the transition from
indigenous forms of communication to new media;
• Discuss the theories on the relationship between media
and society.
• Integrate the values of media literary into our daily life.

• New media is often characterized as opposite on the


category of traditional media just like; Books,
Newspapers, Magazines, sound recording, radio, and
film.

• 1953- (IBM) INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES, was


the 1st electronic computer that became known as “701”
• 1969 – (APRANET) ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS
AGENCY, was created by the US DEPARMENT OF DEFENSE
ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY (DARPA)

• TCP/IP (TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL/


INTERNET PROTOCOL)- It was developed by Robeth Kahn
and Vinton Cerf at the APRANET in 1980s, and became the
common language of the internet.
• 1983 – TCP/ IP was universally adopted, it was a suite of
protocols or rules that governthe transmission of data.

• 1986- there were already 2000 users of the internet using TCP/
IP in which the 56 kilobytes per second (kbps) increased to 1.54
megabytes per second
• 1991 – Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, introduce
the World Wide Web(www) project to the world.
• At first, in 1990, he had written already 3 fundamentals for the
internet

600,000. The internet soon upgraded to 45
Mbps (megabytes per second).

engine because they allowed users to
connect with more information they were
interested.

the authority of a website as a carrier of
information.

• March 29, 1995: free and open World Wide


Web (www) was launched in the
Philippines. Before, that was the first local
bulletin board system (BBS).

Philippine FideoNet Exchange. One BBS in
Metro Manila was now able to connect to
other BBSs in the same area.

• 1993: with Full Funding from the DOST,


the Philnet scaled up. The students from
above state universities were able to connect
to another gateway at the Victoria
University of Australia.

officially connected to the global internet
using the PLDT network center in Makati
City.

conference was held at University of San
Carlos in Cebu.

• Dr. John Brule, a professor emeritus from


Syracuse University, announced “We’re
In!” as the PhilNet connection successfully
linked up with the global internet.

FEATURES OF SOCIAL MEDIA
• 1. It is located in the World Wide Web/ operated using mobile
applications.
• II. It allows users/ account holders to link up with other people (often
called FRIENDS) or simply usrs with similar interest.
• III. It enables users to both seek and access data and information as it
allows users to share opinions and insights while reflecting and
reacting to opinions and insights shared by other users, even using
symbolic icons known as emoji.

used to provided space for users to post their
thoughts, insights, and opinions on self-managed
websites and it is called BLOGS

community of friends can be formed and
maintained on the internet.

MySpace was launched in 2003
and quickly gained popularity due
to its ability to customize their
profiles extensively, including
adding music, backgrounds, and
more. It was particularly popular
among musicians, bands, and
artists to showcase their work.

users to create profiles showcasing their
professional experience, skills, and
accomplishments.

• Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, along
with his college roommates Andrew McCollum,
Eduardo Saverin, Chris Hughes, and Dustin
Moskovitz, in February 2004. Initially, it was
launched as "TheFacebook" and was limited to
Harvard University students.

• Expansion (2004-2005): After its initial success at
Harvard, Facebook expanded to other universities in
the Boston area, the Ivy League, and eventually
colleges across the United States and Canada. In
2005, it dropped "The" from its name and became
known simply as "Facebook."

• High School and Workplace Networks (2005-2006):
In 2005, Facebook introduced high school networks,
allowing students with a valid school email address to
join. In 2006, it further expanded to include corporate
networks, enabling professionals to connect with
colleagues.

2008): Facebook opened its platform to everyone aged
13 and older with a valid email address in 2006,
marking its transition from a college-oriented network
to a global social media platform.

(2008-2010): Facebook launched its mobile
website in 2008, followed by mobile apps
for various platforms, including iOS and
Android.

•IPO and Acquisitions (2012): Facebook
went public with its initial public offering
(IPO) in May 2012, raising $16 billion in one
of the largest tech IPOs in history.

• The mission of Facebook is to give people the power
to share and make the world more open and
connected. It allows people to connect with friends,
family members, and acquiantances and gives people
the opportunity to post and share content such as
photos and status updates.

unique individuals. The focus is on how society
and media can influence large groups of people
to think, act, or behave in certain ways.
