INTRODUCTION
DENITRIFICATION

• Denitrification is the microbial process of reducing nitrate

and nitrite to gaseous forms of nitrogen, principally
nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen (N2).
• It can only occur under anaerobic condition.
• Factors ,:The most important environmental factors
affecting the activity of denitrifying bacteria (and hence
the reactors’ denitrification rates) are temperature, pH,
toxic compounds, carbon source and concentration, and
nitrate concentration

FACTORS OF
DENITRIFICATION

DENITRIFICATION
• Presence of Nitrate- Denitrification only occurs when nitrate is present
• Temperature- denitrification is most rapid as temperatures rises
• Soil wetness - Denitrification can occur in aerobic (adequate oxygen)
conditions, but to a relatively insignificant degree. Wet soils are generally the
trigger for denitrification to occur.
• Soil pH- rate of reaction is affected to the level of soil acidity
• Presence of dissolved carbon - Denitrifying bacteria obtain their energy from
soluble organic carbon.
