What is Power?

Power (physics)
In physics, power is the amount of energy transferred
or converted per unit time. In the International
System of Units, the unit of power is the watt, equal to
one joule per second.

Electrical power is the “rate” at which energy is being

consumed in a circuit and as such all electrical and electronic
components and devices have a limit to the amount of electrical
power that they can safely handle.
What will happen if the power rating of the
resistor is exceeded?

Devices have their parameter

limitations, like the power rating of
the resistors. When a high voltage is
applied, it give a high current that
may exceed the power rating of the
resistor. When the power rating is
exceeded, the resistor becomes hot
and gradually burn.

Summary of Lesson 2
• Voltage is directly proportional to current. This means that as voltage
increases, current also increases.
• Resistance is inversely proportional to current. This means that as the
resistance increases, current decreases.
• Ohmmeter is used to measure resistance.
• Multisim is used to create and simulate circuits.
