INFLECTION POINTS
Relative Maxima and Minima
• A function f is said to have a relative maximum at x0 if there is an open interval
containing x0 on which f(x0) is the largest value, that is, f(x0) ≥ f(x) for all x in the
interval. Similarly, f is said to have a relative minimum at x0 if there is an open
interval containing x0 on which f(x0)is the smallest value, that is, f(x0) ≤ f (x) for
all x in the interval. If f has either a relative maximum or a relative minimum at
x0 , then f is said to have a relative extremum at x0.
Looking Microscopically

• Note : The points x1, x2, x3 , x4, and x5 are critical points. Of these, x1 , x2, and x5 are
stationary points.

First Derivative Test
• A function f has a relative extremum at those critical points where f ’ changes sign.
Formally
Second Derivative Test
Example
• Q:
• Solution:

• The test is inconclusive at x = 0,.A sign analysis of f’ is given in the following table

• Note : The sign of second derivative changes from +ve to –ve so it is a point of inflexion.
Example
