Chapter 1

In this lesson, we are going to read a brochure!

A brochure is a thin book that gives us information.
Different brochures tell us about different things,
such as events, activities and products.
Brochures usually have lots of pictures
and eye-catching headings.
A brochure is different from a magazine. A magazine is usually
A4 in size, while a brochure is usually smaller.
A magazine is usually printed on thin paper,
while a brochure is printed on thicker paper.
On the cover of a brochure, there are lots of pictures
and colours to draw the readers’ attention.
Look at the pictures on this brochure and read its title.
What is the brochure about?
Who wrote this brochure?
What type of company is ‘Panda Tours’?
Let’s look inside the brochure. What is this page about?
The heading is big so that it catches the readers’ eyes.
What do you know about Shenzhen? Where is it?
How far is it from Hong Kong? How can we go there?
On this page, Panda Tours tells readers
about their tour to Shenzhen.
The introduction under the heading tells us where Shenzhen is
and how we can get there. It also tells us how long the tour is.
The price of the tour is highlighted in an eye-catching colour.
The highlights of a tour mean the best parts of the tour
or the parts that we can look forward to.
To attract people, there are sometimes
special discounts for readers.
For the Shenzhen Tour, those who are under 3 years old or
above 65 years old can get $300 off the full price.
The conditions tell us more specific information
about the tour.
The tour is not available every day.
It only runs on Fridays and the weekends.
The other pages of the brochure are about
different cities in the Greater Bay Area.
So who is this brochure for?
Is it for people who want to travel?
Do you come across other brochures?
Where do you see them? What are the brochures about?
There are many types of brochures. For example, on Open Day,
schools may make brochures to tell visitors about their school.
At the doctor’s, we may see brochures telling us about
different types of diseases or how to take care of our body.
