Two pulleys, one 450 mm diameter and the other 200 mm diameter, on parallel

shafts 1.95 m apart are connected by a crossed belt. Find the length of the belt
required and the angle of contact between the belt and each pulley.
What power can be transmitted by the belt when the larger pulley rotates at 200
rev/min, if the tension in the tight side is 1 kN, and the coefficient of friction between
the belt and pulley is 0.25?
A leather belt 9 mm × 250 mm is used to drive a cast iron pulley 900
mm in diameter at 336 r.p.m. If the active arc on the smaller pulley is
120° and the stress in tight side is 2 MPa, find , tension belt, the power
capacity of the belt. The density of leather may be taken as 980 kg/m3,
and the coefficient of friction of leather on cast iron is 0.35 ( P= 32470
W, T1=3950N, T2=1895N, Tc= 550N)
The layout of a double-ply leather belt drive is shown in Fig. 13.29. The
mass of the belt is 2 kg per metre length and the coefficient of friction is
0.35. Calculate (i) the tensions on the tight and loose sides, and (ii) the

The layout of a transmission shaft carrying two pulleys B and C and supported on
bearings A and D is shown in Figure. Power is supplied to the shaft by means of a
vertical belt on the pulley B, which is then transmitted to the pulley C carrying a
horizontal belt. The maximum tension in the belt on the pulley B is 2.5 kN. The
angle of wrap for both the pulleys is 180° and the coefficient of friction is 0.24. The

3:1. The limiting value of tension in the belts is 2.7 kN. The shaft is made of plain
carbon steel 40C8 (Sut= 650 N/mm2 and Syt = 380 N/mm2). The pulleys are keyed to
the shaft. Determine the diameter of the shaft according to the ASME code if, k b = 1.5

A shaft is supported by two bearings placed 1 m apart. A 600 mm diameter pulley is
mounted at a distance of 300 mm to the right of left hand bearing and this drives a
pulley directly below it with the help of belt having maximum tension of 2.25 kN.
Another pulley 400 mm diameter is placed 200 mm to the left of right hand bearing
and is driven with the help of electric motor and belt, which is placed horizontally to
the right. The angle of contact for both the pulleys is 180° and f = 0.24. Determine the
suitable diameter for a solid shaft, allowing working stress of 63 MPa in tension and
42 MPa in shear for the material of shaft.
Design a shaft to transmit power from an electric motor to a lathe head stock through a
pulley by means of a belt drive. The pulley weighs 200 N and is located at 300 mm from the
centre of the bearing. The diameter of the pulley is 200 mm and the maximum power
transmitted is 1 kW at 120 r.p.m. The angle of lap of the belt is 180° and coefficient of friction
between the belt and the pulley is 0.3. The shock and fatigue factors for bending and twisting
are 1.5 and 2.0 respectively. The allowable shear stress in the shaft may be taken as 35 MPa.

The armature shaft of a 40 kW, 720 rpm electric motor, mounted on two bearings
A and B, is shown in Fig. 9.12. The total magnetic pull on the armature is 7 kN
and it can be assumed to be uniformly distributed over a length of 700 mm
midway between the bearings. The shaft is made of steel with an ultimate tensile
strength of 770 N/mm2 and yield strength of 580 N/mm2. Determine the shaft
diameter using the ASME code if,kb = 1.5 and k t = 1.0
Assume that the pulley is keyed to the shaft.
