Function Notation

Function Notation is another way to write y in an equation.

isf(x)
read allowed as
y =x+2 f(x) =x+2 " " f of x
Function Notation
can
f(x)be written with other variables to represent different
( Input , Output )
equations g(x), h(t), k(y), etc.
( x, y )
f(x) = x +2 g( x) = x +2 h( t ) = t +2 ( x , f( x ) )

Ex. Given f(x)= x+2, find f(1)

f(1) =1+2
f(1) = 3
Pro Tip:
Use parenthesis when plugging in.

Example Explanation using PEMDAS

g( x) =5 -3x evaluate g( 2) P (none)
E (none)
g( 2) =5 -3 (2) M/D (Multiply 3 times 2)
=5 -6 A/S (Subtract 5 minus 6)
= -1
Pro Tip:
M/D and A/S are completed from left right.

Example Explanation using PEMDAS

3 P (none)
h( x) = x -3+5 find h( -8 )
4
3 E (none)
h( -8) = (-8)-3+5
4 M/D (Multiply 3 times -8)
-24 (Divide -24 by 4)
= -3+5
4
A/S (Subtract -6 minus 3)
= -6 -3+5 = -9+5= -4 (Add -9 plus 5)
Pro Tip:
Parenthesis in PEMDAS says to do what is inside parenthesis first.

Example Explanation using PEMDAS

v( t ) =500(1+0.5)t find v(3)
3
P (add 1 and 0.5)
v(3) =500(1+0.5) E (1.5 times 1.5 times 1.5)
3
=500( 1.5) M/D (500 times 3.75)
=500( 3.75)
= 1687.5 A/S (none)
Real World
The height of the tallest roller coaster in the world is modeled by the equation
2
g( t)= -34 +140t -10t , where Example
gives
g( t) the height of the riders after seconds. t
Find the height of the riders after 7
seconds.

g( t) = -34 +140 (7)-10 (7) 2

= -34 +140 (7)-10 (49)
= -34 + 980- 490
= 946 - 490
7 seconds, the roller
After
= 456
coaster is at a height of feet.
456
Now you try! find h(9)
Given: A -7
g(x)=4+5x B -4
h(y)=2 - y C 12
2
k(t)=(t-3) -6 D 49
Almost there... find h(9)
A -7
Remember that y is multiplied times .
Try again! It helps to use parenthesis when
plugging in.
B -4

C 12
h(y)=2 - y h(9)=2 - (9)
D 49
Not quite... find h(9)
Remember that multiplication happens before A -7
subtraction. Try again! Multiply times 9
and subtract what you get from 2.
B -4

C 12
h(y)=2 - y h(9)=2 - (9)
D 49
So close... find h(9)
It looks like you may have plugged into the A -7
wrong equation!
You were asked to find h(9), not g(9). Try
again!
B -4

C 12
h(y)=2 - y h(9)=2 - (9)
D 49
Correct! find h(9)
h(y)=2 - y A -7
h(9)= 2 - (9) B -4

B -10 D 9
find k(1)

Try again! 2
=(-2) -6

A -2 C 2

B -10 D 9
find k(1)
Remember to plug it into the
right equation. You were 2
asked for k(1), not g(1). Try k(t)=(t-3) -6
again!

A -2 C 2

B -10 D 9
find k(1)
2
k(t)=(t-3) -6
You were so close, but
2
4-6 would bring the k(1)=(1-3) -6
answer into the 2
negative. =(-2) -6
Try again! =4-6

A -2 C 2

B -10 D 9
find k(1) k(t)=(t-3) -6
2
k(1)=4-6
2
k(1)=(1-3) -6 k(1)= -2
2
k(1)=(-2) -6
