SUMMARY ROAD PERFORMANCE OF MOTOR VEHICLE

-Force acting on vehicle

Force acting on the vehicle can be classified as
:-The force which moves the vehicle, the force which offers
resistance in its motions.
-Road resistances are forces which tend to oppose the
tractive effort (force).
-The major road resistances that must be considered in the
design of a motor vehicle and/or an engine are:
Rolling Resistance ,Air Resistance,Gradient (Grade or Slope)
Rolling Resistance is a turning tire on the ground generates a
Resistance and Inertia (acceleration).
longitudinal force and the force is opposite he direction of
motion and is proportional to the normal force on the tire-
print.
It also depends on mechanical properties, wear, temperature,
load, size, driving and braking forces,
Vehicle speed, Tire inflation pressure,Vertical load on the
tire,Types of tire and the road surface.

Air resistance is the force exerted by the air that opposes

the motion of a vehicle passing through it.
When the vehicle travels uphill, a component of its weight
works in a direction opposite to its motion.
-Air resistance composed of
Form drag (55-60 %),Interference drag (12-18 %),System
drag (10-15 %),Surface drag (8-10 %)
Lift drag(5-8%).
Acceleration Performance
Maximum performance in longitudinal acceleration of a
motor vehicle is determined by engine power or traction
limits on the drive wheels.Tractive effort is the force
generated by a vehicle's engine or motor in order to
generate motion through tractive force. Tractive effort differs
from tractive force, which is the actual force applied at the
road surface, by the amount of rolling resistance present.
