WIT IN JONH DONNE’S POETRY

The wit is the ability to say or write things which are both clever and amusing.
According to Dr. Johnson, Donne’s wit lay in discovery of the hidden resemblance of dissimilar things. He
uses far-fetched images to create wit. His wit lies in the blend of feeling and not merely of opposite
concepts.
For example,
“ She’s all states, and all princes I, Nothing else is,
► In these two lines of ”The Sun Rising”, the beloved is compared to all the states of the world and the
poet to all the monarchs of the world, and again they are united into one.

COLLOQUIALISM IN DONNE’S POETRY

Colloquial language is another vivid characteristic of John Donne’s poetry. Most of the poems of John
Donne show usage of colloquial language. He uses direct and common phrases to startle his reader and
often poem starts in the medias res.Look at the beginning lines of “The Canonization” :
For God’s sake hold thy tongue, and let me love ;
His dramatic quality is strengthened by its colloquial tone. In the song: “ Go and Catch a Falling Star”
we can trace such a quality:
► “Go, and catch a falling star, Get with child a mandrake root”. On perusing the two lines we will see
that like many other poems Donne has employed colloquial language to make the poem more lifelike.
From the lines it is clear that a conversation is going on between two people

1. Argumentative Style of Donne:
►Metaphysical poetry is a fusion of passionate feelings and
logical arguments.
►The method of expanding a reason argument using strong
imagery and a metaphor to effectively control emotions
and feelings has been given the label of metaphysical
conceit making Donne the prime mover of what has
become known as metaphysical School.
►Donne is considered the master of conceit, a figure of
speech that rely on metaphor and imaginative contrast to
argue a point.
