Communication Skill
 Verbal or oral communication is the basic mode how humans communicate
with each other.
 The bandwidth or data rate of communication is around 20Bytes /sec.
 An average students covers around 3-4 books during a semester , each book is
about 500kbytes, making ‘learning’ of around 2.5MBytes.
 It clearly shows humans have severe limitations when it comes to ‘loading’
data inside their minds via Communication.
 After we hear something , we store the information in memory. While a
computer memory is permanent, human memory isn’t and is affected greatly
by emotional factors.

Effective Communication
 Ability to convey ideas, concepts, emotions effectively via speaking or writing
is called effective communication.
 Why are we studying this subject? It forms the core skill which enables you to
showcase your technical abilities(Java/C++/Databases etc)
 In ancient times people had limited means of communication so it mostly
happened Orally or written. Due to lack of communication mini cultures
formed, each city/village distinct and different from the rest. That’s why we
notice that different cities have different languages(or dialects), clothing ,
way of living. All because there was limited interaction with outside world.
 Communication is Life blood of every organization. To exchange information,
ideas, plans, make decision , rules, proposals, contracts we require efficient

Components of Communication
 Communication is process of transmitting and receiving verbal and non-
verbal messages. Its considered effective if it achieves the desired
reaction from the receiver. It includes six components i.e.
 Context
 Sender-Encoder
 Message
 Medium
 Receiver-decoder
 Feedback
 Context : Every message whether oral or written begins with context. It includes
country, culture, organization, external and internal stimuli. External stimuli is the
prompt to send a message. Internal stimuli has a complex influence on how a
sender sends his message. Especially important is ability to analyze receiver’s
culture, viewpoint, needs, skills , status, mental ability, experience and
expectations.
 Sender : When you send a message you are the encoder , the writer or speaker ,
depending on whether message is oral or written. Sender education, culture
personality plays major role.

Components of Communication
 Message : The core idea you wish to communicate. It consists of both
verbal(written or spoken) symbols and non-verbal (unspoken) words. Message
content, how receiver will interpret it, how it may affect your relationship is
important.
 Medium : It is the channel using with which information flow. Language we
select, whether its oral or written, technology we use(message, whatsapp,
facebook etc) all come under this domain. Depending on situation we well
select one of the options.
Components of CommunicationR
 Receiver : Reader or listener is also known as decoder. Receiver is influenced
by context, internal and external stimuli. They are also influenced by non-
verbal gestures of touch, taste and smell.
 Feedback : Ultimately the receiver reacts with either desired response based
on understanding of symbols or with undesired response because of
miscommunication. It can be oral or written . It can also be an action. Silence
is also a type of feedback.
