What is electromagnetic wave?

ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE (EM WAVE) or

electromagnetic radiation is a wave that is create as
a result of vibrations between an electric field and
magnetic field, hence known as electromagnetic
wave.
What is electromagnetic wave?

EM waves can travel through anything even on

vacuum, meaning they do not need any medium to
travel. They travel in a vacuum at a speed of 3x 10
raise to the power of 8 m/s.
Recall Oersted discovery

A changing electric field produces magnetic field.

A changing magnetic field is therefore produced
around a vibrating charge.
According to Michael Faraday

The changing magnetic field will produce electric

field.

There are 7 types of

EM waves
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

They are arranged in a gradual

progression from the waves of lowest
frequency to highest frequency. This
arrangement of EM wave is known as the
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRU,M
Electromagnetic wave

Electric magnet
Is where the region of pull and push
of the magnet is exerted
Electromagnetic wave

Is produced by a charge that changes

its direction or its speed
Electrons are charged particles that
can produced electric and magnetic
field.
Electromagnetic wave
Is considered as a Transverse wave

That means that they move

perpendicular to its other and move to
the propagation of the wave
Electromagnetic wave

Traverse at 3x10 raised to the power of 8

m/s

Denoted as c, the speed of light

Light travels at the speed of 150,000,000
kilometersin 8 minutes
Electromagnetic wave

electromagnetic wave = speed of light

Wavelength = frequency
Wavelength = frequency
Electromagnetic wave
properties
They are produced by accelerated or
oscillating charge.
They do not require any material or medium
for propagation.
They travel in free space at the speed of 3x10
raise to the power of 8 m/s

Ampere’s Law of Electromagnetism

Electromagnetic wave
PRINCIPLES
1. Many natural phenomena exhibit wave-like behaviors. All of
them – water eaves, earthquake waves and sound waves require
a medium to propagate. These are examples of mechanical
waves.
2. Light can also be described as a wave - of changing electric
and magnetic fields that propagate outward from their sources.
These waves , however, do not require a medium to propagate.

3. They propagate at 300,000,000 meters per second in a vacuum

Electromagnetic wave
PRINCIPLES
4. Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves. In simpler
terms, the changing electric and magnetic fields oscillate
perpendicular to each other and to the direction of the
propagating waves. These changing electric and magnetic
fields generate each other through Faraday’s Law of
Induction and Ampere’s law of Electromagnetism. These
changing fields dissociate from the oscillating charge and
propagate out into space at the speed of light.
Electromagnetic wave
Characteristics:

• Amplitude - maximum field strength of the

electric field and magnetic fields.
• Frequency – how many waves per second a
wavelength produces.
• Wavelength – measures the length of an
individual wave in meters.
Electromagnetic wave
Characteristics:

• The longest wavelength has the lowest

frequency; while the shortest wavelength has
the highest frequency.
• The amount of energy is determined through
an increasing frequency
Electromagnetic wave
Characteristics:
Electromagnetic wave
Travels at 300,000,000 m/s
It is denoted as c, the speed of light

V= f
Where:
V = wave speed (m/s)
= wavelength (m)
f=frequency (Hz)
Electromagnetic wave

 a wave is a disturbance that transfers

energy.
An electromagnetic wave comprises of an
electric field ad magnetic field at right
angles to each other and to the direction
of the motion of the wave.
Electromagnetic wave

 All electromagnetic waves travel at the

same speed in a vacuum which is 3x10 8
m/s.
 The electromagnetic wave are often
arranged in the order of the wavelength
and frequency in what is known as the
electromagnetic spectrum.
Electromagnetic wave
 Frequency describes how many waves per second
a wavelength produces while wavelength
measures the length of individual wave in meters.
Waves with longest wavelengths have the lowest
frequencies. On the other hand, , waves with the
shortest wavelengths have the highest frequencies.
