LESSON 3:

Molecular
Geometry and
Polarity of Simple
Compounds
After going through this lesson, you are expected to:
 Define molecular geometry and Valence Shell Electron
Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory;
 Describe the geometry of simple compounds;
 Define polarity;
 Describe the types of molecules based on polarities;
 Determine the factors that determine the bond polarity;
and
 Determine the polarity of simple compounds.
Activity (PRE-TEST)
What is bonding pair?
When a bond is formed between two atoms, each atom will
share one electron. The electrons that are participating in this
bond are known as the bond pairs of electrons. Example:
Molecule of methane , all the four hydrogen atoms form a
bond pair with a central carbon atom.

What is lone pair?

Lone pairs are the pairs of valence electrons that are not shared
with any other atom. They do not participate in covalent bond
formation. Example- Water molecule contains 2 lone pairs on
oxygen atom.
