ABSTRACTION
Why there is a need to classify organisms?
Classifying organisms will help explain the great
diversity of life on Earth and how organisms are related
to each other.
What is Taxonomy?
It is a branch of science that deals with identification,
description, classification and nomenclature of
organisms.
Who is Carolus Linnaeus?

 is a Swedish naturalist who

introduced the binomial
nomenclature of naming and
classifying organism.

 He realized that all the real

knowledge depends on the
method on how the similar is
distinguished from the
dissimilar.
How do we classify organisms?

According to Linnaean Classification,

organisms can be classified
accordingly: kingdom, phylum,
class, order, family, genus, and
species. The kingdom is the largest
group while the species is the
smallest. A kingdom is the highest
level of category.
An order consists of several families; a family of several
genera; a genus of several species. It consists of several
smaller groups called phyla. A phylum is consisting of
several classes. A class consists of several orders.

Carl Woose (1981) proposed a category above a

kingdom, called domain. It is standardized practice to
italicize the genus and species name.
How do we classify organisms?

Scientists commonly use the Three Domain System to

depict the evolutionary history of living things based on
the idea that all cells share a least universal common
ancestor (LUCA) that evolved into three umbrella
domains: the prokaryotic Archaea, prokaryotic
Bacteria, and eukaryotic Eukarya.

The Binomial System of Naming Organisms

 The present system of naming organisms called the

Binomial Nomenclature (or binomen which suggests “two
names” in Latin).
 The first name called the Genus always starts with a
capital letter while the second name called the species
always starts with a small letter. This two-word name is
called the scientific name of a selected organism.
Scientific names are always written either in italics
when printed or are underlined when handwritten.

Guide Questions:
1. Which organisms are similar up to Order Category?
Domesticated Cat and Dog
2. How do you identify the scientific name of an organism?
For any organism identified, a Scientific name is given -it is a
two-word name in which the first name called the Genus
always starts with a capital letter while the second name called
the species always starts with a small letter. It is always written
either in italics when printed or are underlined when
handwritten.
Station 2
The highest taxonomic rank in the hierarchical biological classification
system, above the kingdom level.

The second-largest group of classification in taxonomy.

The taxonomic ranking that comes third in the hierarchy

of classification, after domain and kingdom.
The taxonomic rank (a taxon) consisting of organisms that share
a common attribute; it is further divided into one or more
orders.
A taxonomic rank used in classifying organisms, generally below the
class, and comprised of families sharing a set of similar nature or
character.
A taxonomic rank in the classification of organisms between genus and order.

A taxonomic category ranking used in biological classification that is below

family and above species.

A group of organisms that can reproduce naturally with one another and
create fertile offspring.
Station 3
Station 4
As a student of STEM strand what are the ways that you can contribute to
conservation efforts and monitoring of our endangered species?

1. Conduct research: One of the most important contributions STEM

students in conservation efforts is through research. This could include
studying the behavior and habitat of endangered species, identifying
factors contributing to pollution, or developing new technologies to
monitor and mitigate environmental impacts.
• Volunteer with conservation organizations: There are many
conservation organizations that rely on volunteers to help with
fieldwork, data collection, and other tasks. Look for
opportunities to volunteer with organizations that align with
your interests such as wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, or
citizen science initiatives.

• Use technology to monitor the environment: STEM

students can use their skills to develop new tools and
technologies for monitoring the environment. For example, you
could develop new algorithms for analyzing satellite imagery to
detect changes in land use, or design sensors to monitor water
quality.
• Educate others: Another way STEM students can contribute to
conservation efforts is by educating others about environmental
issues. You can use your knowledge to create educational materials,
give presentations, or organize workshops to help raise awareness
and encourage action.

• Advocate for policy change: STEM students can also use their
knowledge to advocate for policy change on environmental issues. By
staying informed about current environmental policies and
communicating with elected officials, you can help to influence policy
decisions that impact conservation efforts.
SOCIOLOGY
The concept of social
stratification, which is the
division of society into
different social classes,
based on factors such as
income, education, and
occupation. Just as
taxonomists they classify
organisms into different
taxonomic group based on
shared characteristics.
ENGLISH
Many literary works,
such as fables, myths,
and fairy tales, involve
the use of animal
symbolism to convey
deeper meaning. The
classification can help
readers better
understand the
symbolism and
meanings behind these
stories.
FILIPINO
In Filipino folklore and
methodology, there are so
many stories involving
animals and their
supernatural powers.
Example the aswang is a
mythical creature that is
said to transform into
various animals, such as
dog or a bird, to prey on
humans.
BUSINESS
The concept of branding in
business. Just as different
organisms are given
scientific names to
differentiate them from each
other, business often use
branding to distinguish their
products or services from
those of their competitors.
GENDER AND
DEVELOPMENT
The study of taxonomy can provide a useful framework
for understanding the diversity and complexity of biological
systems, including the differences and similarities between
different genders. It can help us to identify and classify
different gender-based traits, behaviors, and
characteristics, and to analyze the underlying biological
and environmental factors that contribute to these
differences.
APPLICATION
Compare and contrast
• Each group must choose two organisms that can be
found in community. Compare and contrast the two species
using the different graphic organizers.
• Examples of graphic organizers: Venn Diagram, T-
Chart, Double bubble map.
