EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES IN PROMOTING

INDEPENDENT LEARNING
TO ACHIEVE APPROPRIATE LEARNING OUTCOMES
What is Independent Learning?
Independent Learning

Independent learning is an approach to studying

where pupils have no ongoing support from teachers,
parents, or other adult supervisors.

Children are given responsibility for their own

learning goals, motivations, and development.
Is it important to create Independent Learners?

◦YES
Independent learner = Effective learner
Significance of Independent Learning
1. Empowerment and Autonomy: Independent learners gain the confidence to
set goals, manage their time effectively, and take charge of their learning process.
2. Lifelong Learning: Fostering independent learning equips students with the
ability to pursue knowledge beyond the classroom, nurturing a lifelong love for
learning.
3. Critical Thinking: Independent learners develop critical thinking skills as they
explore topics of interest, analyze information, and form well-reasoned conclusions.
4. Personalized Learning: Independent learning allows students to focus on areas
of interest and tailor their learning experiences to suit their strengths and needs.
5. Increase academic performance: add all of these benefits together and you
get a more rounded and more academically capable learner. In time, that should
translate into better educational outcomes for that pupil.

Effective strategies to promote
Independent Learning

1. Goal Setting
Encourage students to set specific, achievable
learning goals and regularly review their progress. It allows
students to monitor their writing progress and identify
areas for improvement, promoting self-assessment and
growth.

2. Reflective self-assessment
A method that can be used to encourage independence
when students have finished a piece of work involves asking
them to self-assess what they have done.
It also encourages self-reflection to help students identify
their learning preferences, strengths, and areas for
improvement.

3. Use effective tools and resources

 Wall displays – Offer an alternative point of reference to help
students deal with questions or problems relating to their work

 Set up a reference corner – To make sure that students always have

a place to go when searching for answers, designate an area of your
classroom to be the “reference corner”.

4. Teaching Strategies & Techniques

 Know your pupils
To provide appropriate teaching strategies

 Use Open questions

Open questions encourage students to be more independent because they do
not presuppose a single, definite answer.
 Minimize teacher talk
Although sometimes necessary, these periods of teacher talk should be kept to a minimum,
allowing for other forms of engagement that require greater levels of independence

Make pupils responsible for their own

and each other’s learning
Provide choices You can promote independence in your classroom by presenting students with a set of
appropriate tasks and asking them to complete the task that they believe will be best for them.

Provide different activities

 such as individual activity
 By peer/ Partner
 By groups.

5. Change Mindsets
Learning from failure One of the major obstacles
preventing students from becoming more independent is a
fear of failure. To encourage a more independent approach,
we must help students to see failure as an opportunity to
learn, rather than something to be avoided at all costs.
