biography

Introduction

Chanakya was an ancient royal advisor, economist, Indian teacher,

philosopher and jurist. His sensibility, merit, attitude, skills of
management; policy, administration; strategy of war and various other
aspects are mentioned in this book. He was an unparalleled kind of
personality leaving no one to compete with him. He has written
‘Arthashastra’ and ‘Nitishastra’ which has made him a never ending
phenomena. No one could identify what was going on his mind. He was
very secretive and far sighted. He had mastered each and every branch
of knowledge. He is considered as a political treatise, the Arthashastra.
He was also known by Kautilya or Vishnugupta. His father was Chanak
and was a well known Brahmin.

CONTD…

He plays an important role in the establishment of

the Maurya Empire. He succeeded in throwing the
Nanda Dynasty and putting Chandragupta the real
king to the throne by his far sighted mind. He
served as the chief advisor to both emperors
Chandragupta and his son Bindusara. His works
were lost near the end of the Gupta Empire in the
6th century. There were five schools of thoughts of
Arthashastra as per Kautilya; Brihaspati,
Ushanas, Prachetasa, Manu, Parashara and
Ambhi.

Some of Sri Chanakya Niti-Shastra

1. Do not inhabit a country where you are not respected, cannot

earn your livelihood, have no friends, or cannot acquire
knowledge.
2. Do not put your trust in a bad companion nor ever trust and
ordinary friend, for if he should get angry with you, he may bring
all your secrets to light.
3. Those parents who do not educate their sons are their enemies;
for as is a crane among swans, so are ignorant sons in a public
assembly.
4. He who regards another’s wife as his mother, the wealth that
doesn't belong to him as a lump of mud, and the pleasure and
pain of all other living beings as his own- truly sees things in the
right perspective, as he is a true pandit.
5. We should not fret for what is past, nor should we be anxious
about the future; men of discernment deal only with present
moment.
And so on….

constitute the triple Vedas. These together with Atharvaveda and the Itihasaveda are
known as the Vedas. In concerning discipline of Kautilya’s Arthashratra the disciples
widely proclaim that ‘this ascetic is an accomplished expert of preternatural powers’In

• Alarmed persons may be won over by telling that just as a hidden snake bites and emits
poison over whatever alarms it, so the king apprehensive of danger from thee will ere
long emit the poison of his resentment on thee, so thou mayest better go elsewhere.
Similarly ambitious persons may be won over by telling that just a cow reared by dog-
keepers gives milk to dog but not to Brahmans, so this king gives milk(rewards)to those
who are devoid of velour, foresight, eloquence and bravery, but not to those who are
possessed of noble character; so the other king who is possessed of power to
discriminate men from men may be courted. The school of Manu say that the assembly
of ministers shall be made to consist of twelve members. The school of Brihaspathi say
that it shall consist of sixteen members. The school of Usans say that it shall consist
twenty members.

• But Kautilya holds that it shall consists of as many members as the needs of his
dominion require. When a king has an only son who is either devoid of worldly
pleasures or is a favorite child, the king may keep him under chains. If a king has many
sons, he may send some of them to where there is no heir apparent, nor a child either ju
born or in the embryo. IF king has an only son of last type, he attempts shall be made
procreating a son to him; or sons may be begotten on his daughters. Poisonous snakes
will not dare to enter into such buildings as are provided with Jivanti ,Sveta, and
vandaka, and as are protected by the branches of pejata and of asvattha. Thus remedies
shall be applied against fire and poison. On one side in the rear of the harem, there shal
be made for the residence of women compartments provided not only with all kinds of
medicines useful in midwifery and diseases, but also with well known pot-herbs and a
water-reservoir.
