THE TWO SIDES OF THE INTERNET

What is the Internet?

The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer
networks -- a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have
permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users
at other computers). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)
of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET. The original aim
was to create a network that would allow users of a research computer at one university to
"talk to" research computers at other universities. A side benefit of ARPANet's design was
that, because messages could be routed or rerouted in more than one direction, the network
could continue to function even if parts of it were destroyed in the event of a military attack
or other disaster.
How does the Internet work?

Physically, the Internet uses a portion of the total resources of the currently existing
public telecommunication networks. Technically, what distinguishes the Internet is its
use of a set of protocols called Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP). Two recent adaptations of Internet technology, the Intranet and the
extranet, also make use of the TCP/IP protocol.

The Internet can be seen as having two major components: network protocols and
hardware. The protocols, such as the TCP/IP suite, present sets of rules that devices
must follow in order to complete tasks. Without this common collection of rules,
machines would not be able to communicate.
What is the Internet used for?

The Internet makes it possible to quickly find information, communicate with people
around the world, manage your finances, shop from home, listen to music, watch
videos, and much, much more. Let's take a look at some of the ways the Internet is
most commonly used today.

The internet can also be used for educational purposes in many ways, including
research, online courses, collaborative learning, virtual tours, language learning, test
preparation, and time management and organization.
What are the goodies of the Internet?
• Internet connection is very useful for different personal tasks like sending emails, making
online payments, watching movies, and playing music, making video calls.
• The Internet plays a very important role in shops and retail markets, as it helps to sell and
make online orders.
• Can be used for multiple projects and plans.
• Can also used to store even thousands of information.
• Helps in education and working, and makes it easier.
However, as the saying goes, "With every blessing comes a
curse". And the Internet is no different. It has simplified our
lives, yet whether intentionally or not, we have all become
its slaves.
Examples…
What are the disadvantages?

• Addiction, time-waster, and causes distractions.

• Bullying, trolls, stalkers, and crime.
• Spam and advertising.
• Pornographic and violent images.
• Never being able to disconnect from work.
• Identity theft, hacking, viruses, and cheating.
• Affects focus and patience.
• Depression, loneliness, and social isolation.
• Buying things that you don't need.
• Not a safe place for children.
• Viruses/Malwares
How to use the Net wisely?
Internet safety, also known as online safety, cyber safety and electronic
safety (e-safety), refers to the policies, practices and processes that
reduce the harms to people that are enabled by the (mis)use of
information technology.

Make sure you're using a secure internet connection and choose strong
passwords, enable multi-factor authentication where you can, keep
software and operating systems updated, check that websites look and
feel reliable and finally, review your privacy settings and understand
privacy policies.
