Indices

Year 9
Learning Objective: To demonstrate an understanding of index notation

Index Notation Starter (5 – 10 minutes)

Prior knowledge:
You need to be able to do this for the Corbett Maths 5-a-day
lesson!
Topic – Corbett Maths Video
Square numbers – 226
https://corbettmaths.com/5-a-day/gcse/
Square a number – 227 7th September - Foundation
Square roots - 228

Today we are practising the

ability to work effectively
within the rules of a domain.

Success Criteria: To demonstrate an understanding of index form, to differentiate between index and expanded form, to
compare algebraic expressions in index form

What does 4 actually mean?

4×4 16

Squaring a number means multiplying it by itself e.g

Introduction

What do you think 4 means?

4×4×4×4×4
This is an index. What is an index?

Indices
Indices is the mathematical term for “power”
Indices is the plural term for the singular term ‘Index’
They can be numbers or letters and float happily in the air next to a base number or letter
Indices (powers) only apply
to the

4
5
The index or power number/letter (base)
to the left of it
The base
DO NOT multiply the
base with the power
A BIG No No!
Example – Index form
4
How can we write 5×5×5×5 = 5
This is 5×5×5×5 written in INDEX FORM

Example I do Example you do

Write 3 x 3 x 3 in index form Write g x g x g in index form

Progress Check

Write the following in Index Form

3×3×3×3×3×3 =
Progress Check – solution

I didn’t get the question right, what should I do now?

• Look back at the examples – did you follow the steps correctly?
• Check your maths – have you made a silly mistake?

Example – Expanded form
6
How can we write 7
7x7x7x7x7x7 Expanded form

Example I do Example you do

Write 55 in expanded form Write -24 in index form

Progress Check

Misha says that 123 = 12 x 3

= 36.
Is Misha correct?
Progress Check – solution

Misha says that 123 = 12 x 3

= 36.
Misha is not right….. It is 12 x 12 x 12
