INTRODUCTION
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital's IT Unit is a multifaceted department responsible for overseeing various
aspects of information technology within the hospital.
This chapter provides an overview of the different departments and their functions within the IT Unit.
Departments within the IT Unit
1. Network and Infrastructure Department - Function: Responsible for maintaining and managing the hospital's network
infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity and data transmission.

2. Software Development Department - Function: Develops and maintains software applications to streamline hospital
operations, including patient management and record-keeping systems.

3. Helpdesk and User Support - Function: Offers technical assistance to hospital staff, troubleshooting IT-related issues, and
providing guidance on using IT resources effectively.

4. Data Security and Compliance - Function: Ensures data integrity and security, implements data protection protocols, and
ensures compliance with healthcare data regulations.

5. Database Management Department - Function: Manages and maintains the hospital's databases, ensuring the availability
and accuracy of critical medical records and information.
NETWORK DEVICES

A Computer Network is a digital Telecommunications Network which Allows Nodes to Share

Resource
A network is a interconnected system of computers, devices, or nodes that communicate and
share resources,
such as Router Switch Firewall Server e.t.c,. Networks enable data exchange,
information sharing, and collaborative activities, facilitating communication and data transfer
across local or global scales.

1 ROUTER
A router is a networking device that connects different computer networks together and directs
data traffic between them. It serves as a central hub for devices within a local area network (LAN)
to communicate with devices on other networks, including the internet.
. it Have Fewer Network Interfaces than Switches.
. Router are Used To Provide Connectivity between LANs .
. Router are therefore used to send data over the internet .
2 SWITCH

A switch is a networking device that operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI
(Open Systems Interconnection) model. Its primary function is to connect devices within a
local area network (LAN) and efficiently manage the flow of data between them. Unlike a
hub, which broadcasts data to all devices on a network, a switch is more intelligent and
selectively forwards data only to the device that needs it. This reduces network congestion
and enhances overall network performance.

- it have many network interfaces/ports for end hosts to connect to (usually 24+).
- it use to provide connectivity to hosts within the same LAN (local area network).
- switches do not provide connectivity between LANs/over the internet.
SWITCH
3 FIREWALL
A network firewall is a security device or software application that acts as a barrier between
a private network and the external network, typically the internet. Its primary purpose is to
monitor, filter, and control incoming and outgoing network traffic to protect the network
from unauthorized access, malicious activities, and potential threats.

. It monitor and control network traffic based on configures rules.

- It can be placed ‘inside’ the network, or ‘outside the network;
- Are known as ‘next-generation firewalls’ whan they include more modern and advanced
filtering capabilities.
FIREWALL
4 SERVER
A server is a device that provides function or
services for a clients.
5 CLIENT
CLIENT is divice that accesses a service
made available by a server
