Different Kinds of Extinguishers

The most common fire extinguishers:

• All Purpose Water
• Carbon Dioxide
• Multi-Purpose Dry Chemical
• Dry Powder
• Foam
• Wet chemical
Each kind of extinguisher has a specific use
All Purpose Water

• Use on CLASS A fires

• Pressurized water
Water Fire extinguisher
• Color Coded Red
Carbon Dioxide

• Use on CLASS B and

CLASS C fires
• Hard, plastic nozzle
Carbon Dioxide
• CO2 fire extinguishers are colour coded black.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers

• CO2 extinguishers work by smothering the fire and depriving it of

oxygen.
• They are suitable for fires involving electrical equipment and for Class
B fires, which are those involving:
• Flammable liquids such as petrol, paint, paraffin
• Liquefiable solids such as plastic and rubber.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers

• DO NOT use a CO2 extinguisher in a confined space, as the space will

quickly fill up with CO2 gas at the expense of air containing oxygen -
you could have difficulty breathing.
Foam extinguishers

They are suitable for both Class A and B fires.

• Class A fires: cardboard, paper, wood,
furnishings
• Class B fires: flammable liquids (petrol,
paint, paraffin) and liquefiable solids
(plastic, rubber).
Multi-Purpose Dry Chemical

• Use on CLASS A, CLASS

B, and CLASS C fires
• Fine powder under
pressure
Wet chemical extinguishers

Wet chemical extinguishers are colour

coded yellow.
