• Had the role of head of the army, chief priest and supreme judge
• Helped the state expand and led the Roman soldiers in war against
small bordering villages.

THE REPUBLIC
The Founding of the Republic
• Aristocrats of Rome grew irritated of imperial rule.
• Tarquin the Proud.
• Overthrew the king and manufactured a republic.
• Republic is a government in which the people of the state
have the right to elect officials.
• All male adults could play a role in the government. The word
‘republic’ comes from the Latin term ‘res republica’ which
means ‘public business.’
ROMAN EXPANSION
• Formidable conquerors.
• Diplomacy, or administering relationships with other
countries.
• They conquered neighboring people and slowly grew their
rule.
• By the late 200s BC, Rome controlled all of Italy.
