WHAT IS
HYPERTENSION?
• Hypertension (HTN or HT), also known as high blood
pressure (HBP), is a long-term medical condition in which the
blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated.
• It is termed as the silent killer - Patients asymptomatic - lead to
fatal complications.
• Greater than 140 mm hg of systolic blood pressure and or more
than 90 mmhg of diastolic blood pressure at least on 2 of 3
occasions while measuring the pressure.
What Does It Mean to Have High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure (HBP) is when your blood pressure is consistently too high. Normal
blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg.
What are the different types of high blood
pressure?
There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary high blood
pressure:

• Primary, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure.
For most people who get this kind of blood pressure, it develops over time as they
get older.
• Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition. It usually
gets better after you treat that condition or stop taking the medicines that are
causing it.
