NSS FARM PROJECT

TEAM 1
INTRODUCTION
The National Service Scheme's Farm Work Project stands as a beacon of
community engagement and sustainable development, fostering a sense of
responsibility and service among its volunteers. Through this project, volunteers
are given the opportunity to address crucial agricultural challenges, and
contributing to the society's agrarian well-being. Farm Work Project encapsulates
the essence of the National Service Scheme's dedication to social responsibility
and holistic development.
This project focuses on sustainable and modern agriculture, self sufficiency, social
responsibility and awareness, conservation of environment.
LOCATION OF THE FARM

The farm considered for the analysis in

this report is situated beside Architecture
block, near the East Campus gate.
CONDITION OF FARM
Amidst the lush green campus of our college, this farm seems to be a
patch of uneven land without any major crop cultivated on it.
The land seems to be full of weeds, which is the contrary side for a
cultivable land.
The soil might be reddish-brown loamy soil, currently looking scarce of
water supply.
This land seems to be uncultivated for a long course of time. But if
brought under cultivation, might prove to be very fertile and fruitful.
POSSIBLE CROPS
The main crops grown in this region of Kerala are coconut, arachnid, cocoa, and spices such
as pepper, ginger, nutmeg, and small crops. The income from these crops contributes a lot
to the income of the farm.
• Fruits like Jack, Mango, Banana, Plantain, Pineapple, Papaya, Cashew give good yield.
• Vegetables such as Drumstick, Bitter Gourd, Okra, Brinjal, Green Chillies, Pumpkin,
Cucumber are well known to be grown.
• Spices include Pepper, Ginger, Turmeric, Cardamom, Tamarind, Vanilla, Cloves, Cinnamon,
Nutmeg which could be the possible options.Fruits and vegetables would likely be
preferred over spices.
REVIVAL OF NSS FARM
Crop Rotation:
Crop rotation is an effective agricultural practice for restoring and maintaining the health of
farm land. It involves growing different crops in sequential seasons on the same piece of
land. This technique provides several benefits for soil restoration.
Different section of crops include:
• Major crops grown here such as spices, bananas along with paddy crops.
• Also we could include flowering crops which add to the beauty of the campus, and also
has good market demand.
• Weed control is another major concern which must be look after.

Irrigation:
Improving irrigation techniques is crucial for farm land revival, where inefficient water use
may contribute to land degradation. Implementing efficient irrigation systems and water
conservation techniques also helps to prevent soil salinity and erosion, promoting
sustainable water use, which too is important aspect.
Different modern irrigation techniques could be put into use like drip, sprinkler, subsurface
irrigation along with the implementation of remote sensing technology.

Community involvement:
Engaging local communities in sustainable land management practices and farming
practices fosters a sense of collective responsibility. Local community, due to their
knowledge of their biome, would prove to be helpful in this novel deed of farm restoration
and maintenance.

 Other measures include organic farming practices, compost and manure applications,
inclusion of modern equipments, cultivating crops according to the market needs and
many others
ACTIVITY OUTCOME

 This activity will lead to the growth of agrarian attitude in student

individuals/ volunteers. Also would make them open to challenges faced by
the farmers along with their efforts in the field.
 This would also create recreational centres in the campus.
 Such activity would in some wealth if implemented on a large scale. Also
would introduce the volunteers to the market and its needs.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the NSS Farm Project has not only been a journey of agricultural
exploration but also a testament to the power of community engagement and
sustainable development. The project serves as a platform for fostering a sense
of responsibility and service among participants, highlighting the integral role
that active involvement in agriculture plays in enhancing farming culture and
ensuring self sufficiency. The NSS Farm Project stands as a beacon of how small
acts of service, when multiplied across communities, can contribute to the larger
tapestry of sustainable development.
