Indian Navy Customs & Traditions Commissioning Pennant – Hoisted on Main Mast on the day of ship’s commissioning Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Colours – A ceremony when National Flag and Naval Ensign is hoisted at 0800 hrs Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Illuminating Ship – Ships are illuminated by lights on special occasions i.e. Independence Day, Republic Day, Navy Day or as ordered Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Crossing the Line ceremony – A ceremony when the ships cross Equator. The ship goes out of the routine and all Officers & Men join for the ceremony. Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Piping the Side – Except for foreign Naval Officers for whom Side pipe is given at all times, the following are given side pipe on occasions –

• All Flag Officers in Uniform • All Commanding Officers of Commissioned Ships/ Estb • President & Members of Court Marshal • Officer of the Guard when flying pendant • A body while being brought or sent out of ship Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Piping the Side Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Salutes between War Ship – When a Warship passes another in harbour or at sea they exchange salutes. It may include parading of guard, sounding alert on bigule or pipe still ( at sea salutes are exchanged by pipe only). Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Sunset – A ceremony when National Flag and Naval Ensign is lowered at sunset Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Dressing Ship – Ships are dressed by naval flags on special occasions i.e. Independence Day, Republic Day, Navy Day or as ordered Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions Man & Cheer Ship – A ceremony when the ship’s company man the upper decks to pay respect to the dignitary Indian Navy - Customs & Traditions OOG – When the ship is in foreign waters, an officer of the executive branch is nominated as the Officer of the Guard.
