RIZAL’S LIFE

FAMILY

 Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines, as the seventh child of eleven.
His family, the Mercado-Rizal’s, were relatively affluent, owning land and engaging in farming and
trade.
 His father, Francisco Mercado (Rizal), was a well-respected farmer and businessman. His mother,
Teodora Alonso, was known for her intelligence and strong character.
 Jose Rizal was a 9th generation patrilineal descendant of a Chinese immigrant and business
tycoon Don Dominggo Lamco (Chinese name: pinyin: Ke Yinan) of Laguna was the great – great
grandfather of Rizal.
 Rizal's family lineage was a blend of Chinese, Spanish, and indigenous Filipino ancestry, reflecting
the complex ethnic makeup of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era complex ethnic

CHILDHOOD

 Daily praying of Angelus of 6:00 pm in their altar as all of them gathered for prayers.
 His mother, Teodora, was his first teacher, nurturing his love for reading and writing. She
also instilled in him a strong sense of faith and morality.
 His older brother, Paciano, served as a mentor and confidante, shaping Rizal's political
consciousness and exposing him to the injustices faced by Filipinos under Spanish rule.
 Rizal's artistic talents were evident from a young age, and he enjoyed drawing, sculpting,
and writing poetry.
 At age of three (3), he began to join religious processions, novena in the church
 at the age of five (5), he was able to read the Spanish bible with the help of his mother.
 Nearly 7 years old (June 6, 1868), his father took him for a pilgrimage to antipolo in order
to fulfill his mother’s vows which he had given birth to Trinidad.
EARLY EDUCATION

 1872-1877, studied high school at Ateneo municipal de Manila and graduated with honors.
 1878, took up Philosophy and Letters and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) while
studying surveying at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila
 1879, he enrolled in the college of Medicine at University of Santo Tomas.
 1884, Rizal started writing his first novel, Noli Me Tangere.
 June 21, 1884, he received the degree in Licentiate in Medicine from the Universidad
Central de Madrid.
 June 9, 1885, received the degree in Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters and completed
studies, Doctor of Medicine.
 1886, he studied Ophthalmology at the University of Leipzig (Germany)
EARLY EDUCATION

 February 21, 1887, he completed the novel Noli Me Tangere and March 1887 published
the Noli Me Tangere in Berlin, Germany with the financial support of Dr. Maximo Viola
