Analysis

1.What are the challenges you encountered from the

activity?
2.Why is it important to get the right letters for each
assigned word?
Abstraction:

Originally the word 'discourse' comes from

Latin ‘Discursus’ which denoted
'conversation, speech'.
Abstraction:

Linguistics
- is the scientific study of human language.
- is concerned with how language is formed.
- is also concerned with the relationship between
language and cognition, society, and history.

Linguistics: Language Structure

Language is a complex structure built up of

smaller units connected to each other.
Sentences

- are the largest unit in

linguistics that shows
grammatical structure.
Discourse: Structure above the
Sentence
There are structures above the sentence because they are made
by combining sentences together. They are “complete” in a way
that sentences are not.

These structures are DISCOURSE and TEXT.

DISCOURSE
- is a language “above the sentence.”
- is a language “in use.”
-is a form of social practice in which language plays a central
role.
DISCOURSE
- is a unit that is larger than sentences.

Words are larger than letters, sentences are larger than words, and
discourses are larger than sentences.
DISCOURSE
-any coherent succession of sentences – spoken or written
However, written discourse is more structurally complex and
more elaborate than spoken discourse .
This is because in written discourse, we lack body language and
gestures.
A- I studied last night and it was tiring.
B- Studying last night was tiring.

Which is written and which one is spoken?

Maria: Will I see you tonight?
Renato: I never make plans that far ahead.

Explanation
Maria asks Renato a yes or no question but hasn’t been given
the expected answer.
As a result, Maria has to work out Renato’s intended meaning
from the situation.
Spoken discourse contains more repetition,
hesitations, and redundancy because it is produced
in real time (i.e. on the spot).
Application

1.Define TEXT and DISCOURSE in your own sentences.

2.Give sample situations wherein TEXT as a CONNECTED
DISCOURSE is commonly observed.
